The resulting grasp can adapt to varied shapes without requiring a precisely planned pattern of rigid-finger contacts. It is a research system—not a retail robot—and its gentle, compliant design does not make every object safe or possible to lift.
What is the tentacle robot?
It is a soft gripper described in a 2022 research paper, not a named consumer robot. The device consists of an array of slender, hollow elastomer filaments. The researchers call its grasping strategy “entanglement grasping”: rather than placing a few rigid fingers at carefully selected points, the array makes many distributed contacts and lets the filaments collectively hold the target.
The primary study, “Active entanglement enables stochastic, topological grasping,” was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on October 10, 2022. Read the PNAS paper or its PubMed record.
How does entanglement grasping work?
- Fluid pressure actuates the filaments. Pressure inside the hollow elastomer elements makes them bend or curl.
- The array contacts the object. Individual filaments conform locally to the surface; their contacts are distributed rather than arranged as a single precise, preplanned grip.
- Filaments interact with one another. As they curl around the target, some may knot or entangle with neighboring filaments. Together, these contacts form a topological hold.
- Pressure is released to let go. Deflating the filaments allows them to uncurl and release the object.
The approach is compliant and stochastic: the exact contact pattern can vary, while the array’s collective interaction creates the grasp. That can reduce the need for exact object recognition and carefully planned finger placement in the demonstrated approach. It does not establish that a practical robot using this gripper never needs sensing, feedback, or supervision. The study explains the design and its limits.

What can it grasp—and where does it struggle?
The researchers evaluated the gripper with targets varying in size, weight, shape, and topological complexity. Harvard’s account describes demonstrations with assorted objects, including toys and a soft succulent plant. The work’s central advantage is the way compliant filaments adapt through many local contacts, rather than relying on a rigid set of fingers to meet an exact geometry.
There is a key physical constraint: a filament must be able to curl around or beneath part of an object to help secure it. A rigid plate or narrow rod lying flat on a surface can be impossible to lift if the filaments cannot get underneath. So the gripper can accommodate a range of challenging shapes, but it cannot grasp every object in every position.

Does “soft” mean safe for fragile objects?
Compliance can make contact gentler than a grasp made with rigid fingers, and the researchers describe the result as a secure but gentle grasp. That is a design goal, not a universal safety guarantee. The published material does not establish a general safety threshold for every fragile item or prove that the gripper is suitable for all delicate objects.
The researchers and Harvard discuss potential uses such as handling soft fruit, medical tissue, or fragile, irregular warehouse items. These are proposed application areas, not evidence of commercial deployment or clinical readiness. Harvard SEAS describes the demonstrations and proposed uses.

How does it compare with conventional grippers?
Entanglement grasping is a different design tradeoff, not a proven universal replacement for parallel-jaw, suction, or other soft grippers. It favors compliance and collective contact over a precisely planned contact pattern. In practice, comparisons depend on the target object and task:
- Shape and topology: the filament array is designed to adapt to varied geometries, but it still needs a way to curl around or under the target.
- Repeatability: the grasp is stochastic and contact-driven, rather than a fixed, identical finger-placement pattern.
- Planning and sensing: the approach can reduce reliance on precise planning in the demonstrated system; the evidence does not support a blanket claim that sensing is never needed.
- Gentleness and retention: compliant contacts may be useful for delicate objects, but the sources do not establish a universal safety or payload rating.
- Actuation and release: the design relies on fluidically actuated filaments, which require fluidic hardware; release occurs when the filaments deflate and uncurl.
The paper reports no single headline figure that can serve as a general success rate, payload rating, or safety threshold. Its publication identifiers are PNAS volume 119, issue 42, article e2209819119—not performance statistics. The PubMed record confirms the article details.

Can you buy one?
The available descriptions identify a custom research gripper and a technology-transfer innovation, not a verified consumer product, compatible accessory, or validated DIY kit. A pump or tubing alone would not reproduce the mechanically programmed filament array. Harvard’s Office of Technology Development lists the concept as Robotic Grasping via Entanglement; that listing does not establish retail availability or confirm a current licensing offer.
