First confirm those details with the road project team; then keep the same dated directions current on storefront signs, your website or listing, email, and social media. Construction phases can change access, so verify before publishing each update.
Get confirmed access details before giving directions
Contact the project owner or construction team before work affects your usual route. Ask for a named contact and a current schedule or phase map. FHWA says agency notices may cover traffic, duration, and foreseeable disruptions, and businesses have an opportunity to raise special needs. Its guidance also recommends regular project reports.
Confirm the details customers and staff will need:
- Which streets, turns, driveways, sidewalks, or entrances will be closed, and when each change begins and ends.
- The route customers can use, including the approach from familiar cross streets and the entrance that will remain available.
- Where customer parking, accessible parking, pickup, or curbside service will be available.
- Whether deliveries can reach the store, which route suppliers should take, and whether delivery hours or access points will change.
- Whether an alternate entrance or temporary access point is planned, and how long it is expected to be used.
- Which agency controls the street and signs, and what approval is needed for any temporary sign.
FHWA lists requests such as roadway entrance signs, temporary access points, alternate parking, a single agency contact, and regular reports as possibilities—not guaranteed services. Raise them with the project team and ask what is feasible and who must approve them. See FHWA’s business-access guidance.
Give customers a route they can follow
Use plain directions anchored to landmarks people know: a cross street, a permitted turn, the usable driveway or door, and the parking or pickup location. Add a simple map when the detour is not obvious. WisDOT recommends maps showing alternate routes, and MnDOT recommends putting maps on doors, social media, and mailings.

Do not assume a navigation app reflects the official detour. MnDOT notes that apps may not use it. Tell customers to follow the confirmed approach and any posted official traffic directions, and provide a phone number for someone who needs help. Keep the map focused on customer decisions: where to turn, where to enter, and where to stop.
Tell people clearly that the store is open
Put a short, readable notice where customers make decisions: on the storefront, on the store’s website or listing, in email updates, and on social channels. MnDOT suggests “doors are open” wording. Pair that reassurance with the route; “We’re open” by itself does not tell someone how to reach you.

Each channel has a different job. Storefront signs reach people already nearby and remain visible at the decision point. A web page or map can carry more route detail and be updated quickly. Email and social posts can reach existing customers, but people may see an old post later. Repeat the same route and date across channels, and pin the current social update when possible.
MnDOT and WisDOT describe different approaches to business-related detour signs: MnDOT says it directs drivers to business areas rather than listing individual businesses, while WisDOT describes temporary business signs subject to agency guidelines. Practices are not universal. Ask the project contact which signs are permitted, where they can be placed, and whether approval is required before putting signs in a public right-of-way or on construction barriers. A weather-resistant open or directional sign can help if its placement is approved.

Keep directions synchronized as construction changes
Assign one person to maintain the current directions and keep the project contact’s details handy. Subscribe to project updates, attend a public meeting if one is offered, and ask to be notified before phases that affect access. Toronto recommends subscribing to updates and refreshing signage as required; FHWA recommends regular project reports.
- Before work starts: Request the schedule, phase map, route, entrance, parking, and delivery arrangements. Build the map and a short customer FAQ from confirmed details. Prepare the same message for signs, the store listing or web page, email, and social media.
- At every phase change: Verify the route and entrance with the project contact. Update the map and all customer-facing channels together, add an “Updated” date and time to digital notices, and send the revised directions to staff and suppliers.
- If access is blocked or a sign misleads customers: Report it promptly to the project contact or contractor, then give customers the best confirmed alternative. Do not describe an unverified road, sidewalk, entrance, or parking area as open.
- After work is complete: Tell customers the normal route has returned, once confirmed. MnDOT suggests celebrating after a project and sharing feedback with the agency.
Plan for deliveries, pickup, and staff questions
Customer access is only part of the plan. Confirm delivery routes and timing with suppliers before closures begin, and tell drivers which entrance or temporary access point to use. Where feasible, identify a customer parking or curbside pickup location that will remain usable. Give staff the same dated map and a short answer to common questions so they do not improvise conflicting directions.

FHWA describes the two central construction concerns as maintaining access for customers and deliveries, and providing enough signage and visibility for customers to know a business is open and how to enter and exit. Use that as a practical checklist when discussing accommodations with the project team.

We’re open during [project/road name] work. From [date or phase], use [street/turn] and enter at [door/driveway]. Customer parking or pickup is at [location]. The project may change; check [store webpage/social account] or call [number] for the latest directions. Last updated: [date/time].
Keep the message brief on signs and link or point to the fuller map online. Replace the date and directions whenever the project changes access; remove obsolete notices so customers are not left following a superseded route.
