Yes. Android malware can steal banking credentials even when it is installed from outside Google Play. The risk depends on what an app does and what access it receives—not simply where it came from. An app downloaded from a browser or message is not automatically malicious, and a permission request alone does not prove wrongdoing.

How an off-store app can steal banking details

Google defines phishing code as software that impersonates a trusted source, asks for credentials or billing information, and sends that information to a third party. Banking credentials are among the common targets. A trojan may also appear legitimate while concealing harmful behavior. These are recognized ways malware can target financial information; they do not mean every app outside Google Play can directly read data inside a banking app.

Google calls apps installed directly from browsers, messaging apps, and file managers “Internet-sideloading sources.” Google identifies RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, NOTIFICATION_LISTENER, and ACCESSIBILITY as permissions frequently abused in financial fraud. Their significance depends on the app’s purpose and behavior: a legitimate app may need a sensitive permission, but an unclear request from a newly installed app deserves scrutiny. Android version, device, permission grants, and available protections can affect the specific risk.

What Google Play Protect can—and cannot—do

On Android devices with Google Play services, Play Protect scans apps regardless of where they were downloaded. Google says it can check unknown apps during installation and warn about or block detected threats. Google also reports that, in select markets, enhanced fraud protection blocks installation from internet-sideloading sources when an app declares certain sensitive permissions. Availability is not universal, and scanning is not a guarantee that every harmful app will be detected.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Google’s Play Protect warning guidance gives this example: “This app can request access to sensitive data. This can increase the risk of identity theft or financial fraud.” Treat such a warning as a reason to stop and evaluate the app, not as proof that every app requesting access is malicious.

What Google’s figures say about the threat

Google’s figures indicate that off-store malware is an active concern, but they are company-reported operational measures—not estimates of an individual user’s chance of infection.

Figure What Google reported
2024 detections Google reported identifying more than 13 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2024.
Sensitive-permission malware Google reported that more than 95 percent of app installations from major malware families exploiting sensitive permissions highly correlated with financial fraud came from internet-sideloading sources. This describes the studied families and installations, not all off-store apps.
2025 detections Google reported that real-time scanning identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2025.
Enhanced fraud protection Google reported blocking 266 million risky installation attempts and protecting against 872,000 unique high-risk applications through enhanced fraud protection in 2025.

Google also reported scanning more than 350 billion Android apps daily in 2026. These numbers describe Google’s security operations; they do not establish that Google Play or any other installation route is risk-free.

How to reduce the risk

  • Keep Play Protect enabled. Heed its scan results and warnings. Google recommends keeping the protection on.
  • Use a trustworthy source. Prefer an official app store or the publisher’s verified channel. Do not install an app because a caller, message, or pop-up is pressuring you to do so. Google says scammers may persuade people to disable Play Protect before installing a malicious app from outside the store.
  • Check sensitive permission requests. Before granting SMS, notification-listener, or Accessibility access, ask whether that feature genuinely needs it—especially if the app came from a web page or message.
  • Stop if the app’s source or purpose is unclear. A familiar name or convincing screen is not enough to establish that an app is genuine; verify the publisher through a known official channel.

If you suspect an app is malicious

  1. Stop using the app and do not enter banking credentials into it.
  2. Contact your bank through its official app or a phone number you already know is genuine. Follow the bank’s instructions for securing your account.
  3. Heed Play Protect’s scan or warning prompts. Google recommends keeping it enabled, but its scans do not guarantee that every threat will be found.
