“Mushroom-powered” is catchy, but it does not mean these robots ran on energy from mushrooms. In a Cornell research demonstration, living fungal mycelium provided electrical signals that an interface processed into movement commands for two robots: a soft spider-shaped walker and a wheeled bot. The work, published in Science Robotics on August 28, 2024, shows one way living material could contribute sensing and control—not a field-ready robot powered by fungus.
How did fungal signals control the robots?
Mycelium is the network of threadlike structures that forms the vegetative part of a fungus. Cornell researchers grew fungal cultures and connected them to an electronic interface built into the robot system. The interface measured electrical activity in the mycelium, filtered interference, processed the signal, and detected rhythmic spikes. It then converted those patterns into digital commands for the robots’ mechanical actuators.
In the experiments described by Cornell, continuous spikes prompted movement. Researchers also used ultraviolet light to stimulate the mycelium and observed changes in the robots’ gaits. They could override the mycelium’s native signal as well. The result was not a mushroom directly moving a machine: biological electrical activity supplied an input, while electronics translated that input into actuator commands.
Cornell’s account describes the work and its publication in “Biohybrid robots controlled by electrical impulses — in mushrooms”. The paper is titled “Sensorimotor Control of Robots Mediated by Electrophysiological Measurements of Fungal Mycelia.”

What kinds of robots moved?

Cornell reports gait changes following ultraviolet stimulation, but does not present these prototypes as products or provide a consumer-style comparison of speed, range, cost, or performance.
Were the robots powered by mushrooms?
The evidence supports a narrower description: mycelium supplied electrical activity used for sensing and control. It does not establish that the fungus supplied all the energy needed to operate the robots. The electronic interface and mechanical actuators remained part of the system.

That distinction matters because a living component in a robot is not necessarily its power source. In this demonstration, the central idea was to use fungal activity as an input that could influence movement, rather than to replace batteries or other operating-power systems.
Can they sense soil or apply fertilizer?
Not in the demonstrated experiments described by Cornell. The reported input was light, including ultraviolet stimulation. The researchers discussed chemical sensing as a possible future direction; for example, sensing soil chemistry might eventually inform fertilizer use. That is a proposed application, not a demonstrated ability to analyze soil or dispense fertilizer.

Senior author Robert Shepherd, a Cornell professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, described the distinction this way: “In this case we used light as the input, but in the future it will be chemical.”

The study is a research demonstration, not evidence of autonomous operation in farms, environmental cleanup, space missions, or other field settings. Cornell’s account notes that keeping fungal cultures free of contamination was a practical challenge. A functioning system also depends on reliably recording biological signals and translating them into useful commands—work that brings together robotics, electronics, mycology, neurobiology, and signal processing.

In separate reporting, Greenbot quoted University of Southampton lecturer Rafael Mestre warning that large-scale release could disrupt ecosystems: “If you release these robots in large numbers, it could be disruptive.” This is an outside expert’s caution reported by Greenbot, not a measured ecological effect of Cornell’s prototypes. The report is “Mushroom-powered Robots: A Sustainable Step Toward Biohybrid Machines”.
The broader research question is whether living systems can help robots respond to unfamiliar inputs. Lead author Anand Mishra told Cornell: “That’s why we think, OK, if you wanted to build future robots, how can they work in an unexpected environment? We can leverage these living systems, and any unknown input comes in, the robot will respond to that.” The prototypes show a route worth investigating; they do not establish that a fungus can independently interpret any unknown condition or make a robot autonomous.
