ESP HTML Compressor is a Python utility that minifies separate HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files and converts them into hexadecimal arrays for inclusion in ESP8266 or ESP32 program memory. It prepares assets for a microcontroller project; it is not itself a web server or hosting service.
What ESP HTML Compressor does
The project, created by Gheotic, addresses a practical way to package small website assets for microcontrollers. Its script processes files and generates C/C++-style data arrays that an ESP project can serve through its own web-server code. The repository example includes a PROGMEM array and server routes for an index page and a JavaScript file. See the project repository and example.
In the creator’s account, keeping CSS and JavaScript in separate files was a benefit over putting everything into one HTML document: each generated file could be added or updated in the ESP project independently. That is the creator’s stated rationale, not a measured performance comparison. Gheotic’s project description.
How to use the documented workflow
- Prepare the inputs. Create a folder named
HTMLand put the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files you want to package in it. - Check filenames. The README says filenames should use punctuation only for the extension. For example, it flags
jquery-3.3.1.jsand suggests a name such asjquery_3_3_1.jsinstead. - Run the converter. Run
Convert.pyas described in the repository. The README says generated output is placed in anoutput_dirfolder. - Add the output to your ESP project. Copy the generated declarations into the ESP8266 or ESP32 project and connect them to your own web-server routes. The repository example shows program-memory data being returned for requested assets.
The README documents this folder-and-script process; it does not establish that the converter automatically installs a server, configures routes, or deploys a finished site. Repository instructions and example.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compatibility and limitations to check
Python version
The README says, “Only tested with Python 3.5”. This is a historical testing note, not confirmation of compatibility with current Python versions. The project sources do not establish present-day support. GitHub repository.
Asset names and libraries
Filename punctuation beyond the extension is a documented concern, so normalize names before conversion and make sure the names used in your server routes match the generated output. Gheotic also reports that small web files worked for them, while implementing Bootstrap and jQuery seemed to cause problems. That is one creator’s observation; it does not prove those libraries are universally incompatible. Creator’s account of observed issues.

Memory and request handling
Generated arrays reside in program memory, so consider the size of the minified assets against the capacity available to your firmware. The repository gives an integration example but does not provide a quantified capacity limit, benchmark, or performance result. Test the actual asset set and request pattern on your board and server code.
How it compares with filesystem storage
Gheotic describes trying SPIFFS and a text-to-C/C++-string method in their own project. They report that the string approach used too much storage for their needs and that their SPIFFS attempt crashed an ESP8266 when multiple files were requested concurrently; they speculated SPIFFS might work on ESP32 but said they had not tried it. These are personal project observations, not general findings about SPIFFS, ESP8266, or ESP32.

The choice depends on your implementation: whether source assets should remain separate during authoring, how you want generated data stored, the memory available, how your server handles concurrent asset requests, and whether your files work with the converter’s naming and library constraints. The sources do not provide controlled comparative measurements for these approaches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider it
ESP HTML Compressor may suit a developer who already has a small set of local web assets and wants to package them as arrays for an ESP8266 or ESP32 firmware project. It is less suitable as a drop-in web-hosting solution: you still need an ESP project and server code to return the generated assets, and the documented Python and library constraints should be tested against your setup.
