You can run CircuitPython on STM32 hardware, but support is not universal: the documented port covers selected STM32 F4, F7, and H7 chips, and you must match the exact board to a supported CircuitPython configuration. Once you have the right target, connect to the correct USB port, install its firmware, and upload a code.py file to the CIRCUITPY drive.

Check whether your exact STM32 board is supported

Start with the CircuitPython STM32 port documentation. It documents support for the F4, F7, and H7 families, but that does not mean every chip in those families—or every board built around them—has an official, ready-to-use image. The port uses board-specific pin maps and configuration, so confirm that your precise board has a matching target before buying it or attempting a flash.

The Feather STM32F405 Express is a concrete STM32F4 target in the documentation. Treat it as an example of a documented board target, not as evidence that any STM32F405 board has the same firmware configuration or pin assignments.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Exact CircuitPython target: Look for a configuration matching the board, not just its MCU family.
  • Programming options: Check whether the board has an integrated ST-Link debugger/programmer or whether you will need another flashing route.
  • USB routing and power: Identify which connector reaches the MCU USB interface and whether another connector is needed to power or debug the board.
  • Pins and peripherals: Match the board’s mapped pins and supported peripherals to the LED, sensor, or other hardware you intend to use.
  • Documentation: Make sure you can find the board manual and its CircuitPython pin and setup information.

ST’s Nucleo range includes Nucleo-32, Nucleo-64, and Nucleo-144 boards, with different connectors and configurations. For example, ST identifies the NUCLEO-F446RE as an STM32F446RE Nucleo-64 with Arduino and ST Morpho connectivity. Those features do not establish that CircuitPython has an exact target for it. Verify that target before treating a Nucleo as plug-and-play.

Find the USB port that CircuitPython uses

On many ST Nucleo and Discovery boards, the primary USB connector is wired to the integrated ST-Link debugger. A separate USB OTG connector may provide access to the MCU’s USB interface, which is the connection used for CircuitPython. The arrangement varies by model; consult the board manual and the ST Nucleo board overview rather than relying on connector position or labeling alone.

Some boards may still need the ST-Link connector attached for power even when you use the MCU’s USB connection for CircuitPython. Check your model’s manual for its power requirements. ST says Nucleo boards include an STLINK debugger/programmer, but that built-in tool does not guarantee CircuitPython support for the board.

Install CircuitPython firmware

The available flashing method depends on the board and chip. The STM32 port documentation describes programming and debugging with ST-Link, as well as a built-in ROM DFU route for relevant F4, F7, and H7 chips that do not have a debugger. DFU is not a universal substitute for checking the exact board instructions.

Use the board’s documented ST-Link route

If your board has an integrated ST-Link, follow the CircuitPython port and board documentation for programming and debugging. If your board lacks a debugger, an external ST-Link/SWD debugger may be useful, but it is optional when an appropriate onboard debugger or DFU route is available.

Use ROM DFU where the board supports it

For the documented DFU procedure, BOOT0 must be high and BOOT1 low when the board resets. The physical switches or jumpers used to set those states depend on the board, so follow its manual rather than copying a switch sequence from another model. The guide identifies STM32CubeProgrammer for Windows and dfu-util for macOS and Linux. Use the port’s instructions for the firmware and programming steps that match your target.

Connect to CircuitPython and upload your first script

  1. Connect the MCU’s CircuitPython USB interface. Use the connector routed to the MCU, not the ST-Link USB connector unless the board’s documentation says it serves that role. Supply power as the manual requires.
  2. Confirm the storage drive appears. After CircuitPython starts, look for a drive named CIRCUITPY.
  3. Create a small code.py. Save it at the root of the CIRCUITPY drive. A simple first project can use the board’s status LED or a sensor supported by that board.
  4. Use the CDC serial connection for the REPL. CircuitPython exposes a CDC virtual serial connection for its interactive prompt and debugging. Mu is one editor and terminal option mentioned in the setup documentation.

Pin names and hardware APIs depend on the board configuration. Use the matching board pinout and current CircuitPython documentation; an example written for another board may refer to unavailable pins or peripherals.

Troubleshoot common first-setup problems

  • No CircuitPython drive appears: Confirm you used the MCU’s USB interface, that the board is powered as required, and that firmware for the exact board target was installed.
  • The board connects only as a debugger: You may be plugged into the ST-Link connector rather than the MCU’s USB port. Check the connector routing in the manual.
  • DFU is not detected: Recheck BOOT0 high and BOOT1 low during reset, then verify the board-specific switch or jumper settings and the host tool instructions.
  • A sample script fails on a pin or peripheral: Check that it matches your board’s pin mapping and supported hardware APIs rather than assuming another STM32 board uses the same configuration.
