You can set up and use a Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse by preparing Raspberry Pi OS and remote access before the first boot, connecting the camera to the correct CSI connector, then running the camera tools over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. For a headless install, Raspberry Pi OS Lite is a practical option; save captures to files rather than expecting a preview window to appear over SSH.

What you need before starting

  • A Raspberry Pi computer with a CSI camera connector. Raspberry Pi camera modules require this connector; check the instructions for your exact board before choosing or fitting a cable. Raspberry Pi camera documentation.
  • A Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera (HQ Camera) and a lens whose mount matches the camera variant. The HQ Camera is a 12-megapixel model offered with CS- or M12-mount variants for external lenses. Raspberry Pi camera documentation.
  • A network connection and a remote-access method configured before first boot. Raspberry Pi Imager can configure Raspberry Pi OS, networking, a user, and SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Prepare the Pi for headless access

A headless Raspberry Pi operates without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Raspberry Pi’s documented first-boot remote-access choices include SSH and Raspberry Pi Connect. SSH is suited to command-line camera tasks. VNC can be used for later access on desktop editions, but it is incompatible with Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

  1. Open Raspberry Pi Imager and choose a Raspberry Pi OS edition. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is a reasonable choice if you plan to operate the device remotely without a desktop.
  2. In Imager’s customisation settings, configure the network and user, then enable SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Use the remote-access method that fits how you intend to connect.
  3. Write the image to the Pi’s storage, insert it into the board, connect power, and allow time for first boot and network connection. Raspberry Pi notes that this can take several minutes depending on the board and SD card.
  4. Connect to the Pi using the route you configured. With SSH, log in from another computer using the Pi’s network address and configured credentials. With Raspberry Pi Connect, use its documented connection workflow.

Connect the HQ Camera and check detection

Power off the Pi before connecting the camera. Fit the camera cable to the CSI connector specified for your board and camera; connector position and cable requirements vary, so do not assume that a cable for one Pi model fits another. Secure the cable at both ends, then power the Pi back on. Raspberry Pi camera documentation.

Once logged in remotely, run the camera listing command:

The output lists detected cameras; Raspberry Pi’s example identifies the HQ Camera sensor as IMX477. If more than one camera is connected, note the index shown for the camera you want to use. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Capture a still image or video over SSH

Raspberry Pi OS includes the basic rpicam-apps. Use rpicam-still for still images and rpicam-vid for video. These commands save output rather than relying on a preview window, which is the safer workflow for a Pi being controlled remotely without a local display. • Note for customers who use a Raspberry Pi 5: Since there are 2 camera ports on Raspberry Pi 5, please remember cam1 is the default one, while you connect the camera to cam0, please use the dtoverlay code: dtoverlay=imx477, cam0

Take a still image

rpicam-still --output image.jpg

This asks the camera application to capture a still and write it to image.jpg in the current directory. To select a particular camera when multiple are present, add its listed index, for example:

rpicam-still --camera 1 --output image.jpg

Record video

rpicam-vid --output video.h264

Use --camera N with the index reported by rpicam-hello --list-cameras when you need to select one camera explicitly. The available documentation establishes these applications as the still and video capture tools; consult their current command help or Raspberry Pi camera software documentation for additional capture options.

Choose a lens and remote-access method

Decision What to match Practical implication
HQ Camera lens mount CS or M12, matching the camera variant Confirm mount compatibility first, then assess field of view, focus, and application needs. The available official information does not establish a best lens or comparative image quality.
First-boot remote access SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect SSH gives command-line access for running capture commands. Raspberry Pi Connect is another official first-boot remote-access option; the documentation cited here does not establish comparative performance or availability details.

Troubleshoot a headless camera setup

The Pi is not reachable

  • Check that the network details and user were configured in Raspberry Pi Imager.
  • Allow several minutes for first boot and wireless connection; timing can depend on the board and SD card.
  • Confirm that you enabled the remote-access method you are trying to use.

The camera is not listed

  1. Shut down the Pi and check that the cable is seated at both the camera and board ends.
  2. Verify that the cable and connector match the instructions for your specific Pi board and camera.
  3. Restart, log in remotely, and run rpicam-hello --list-cameras again.

The wrong camera is selected

Do not assume the HQ Camera always has index 0. Use the index shown in the listing and pass it with --camera N to the capture command. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

A preview does not appear over SSH

rpicam-hello is primarily a preview-oriented check. Preview rendering depends on display paths, and Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation says X forwarding is not supported by the default zero-copy paths. For a fully headless workflow, use rpicam-still or rpicam-vid to save a file and retrieve it remotely.

An older tutorial recommends legacy camera commands

Use the current rpicam applications described in Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation. The legacy camera stack is limited to older camera modules, so advice based on it may not apply to the HQ Camera’s current software path. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.
