You can combine remote feeding and aquarium viewing in a DIY build in two ways: put an ESP32-CAM on the feeder, or pair a remote-capable feeder with a separate camera and computer. These are example project architectures, not validated unattended-care products. The project documentation does not establish portion accuracy, long-term reliability, food compatibility across feeders, or secure access over the public internet.
Choose an architecture before buying parts
| Approach | How it works | What the project documents |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated camera and feeder | An ESP32-CAM provides the camera and Wi-Fi interface, while a servo turns the dispenser. | The Wi-Fi Fish Feeder With Camera project lists an ESP32-CAM, a large continuous-rotation servo, a 608 bearing, M3 hardware, wires, a micro-USB PCB and a 5V adapter. It describes opening the device’s assigned IP address in a browser on the local network. Project documentation. |
| Separate camera and feeder | A feeder handles dispensing while a separate camera and computer handle viewing and remote access. | The M5StickC/TinyGo FishFeeder project describes combining the feeder with a Raspberry Pi camera. Its feeder accepts USB/serial commands for a feeding sequence or a single dispense. Project documentation. |
The integrated approach puts camera and feeder functions in one project, while the separate approach keeps viewing and dispensing on distinct hardware. The examples do not provide equivalent measurements for cost, precision, reliability, or response time, so they cannot be ranked on those grounds.
Parts and dispenser choices depend on the mechanism
ESP32-CAM with a continuous-rotation servo
The integrated camera-feeder repository calls for a large continuous-rotation servo, ESP32-CAM module with Wi-Fi antenna, micro-USB PCB, 5V adapter, regular 608 bearing, M3 nuts, bolts and washers, and wires. An aluminium rod measuring 15 × 15 mm is listed as optional. Its instructions connect servo 5V, ground and signal to GPIO12 and discuss the Arduino ESP32 library and board configuration. Treat this as that project’s wiring description, not a universal pinout: check the documentation for your exact board and servo before powering the circuit. The repository suggests trying a separate 5V supply to the ESP32 if camera lines or brownout errors occur. See the project parts and instructions.
SG90 micro servo for a different feeder design
A separate ESP32 feeder project names an SG90 micro servo, an AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM MB/programmer, M3 screws and flakes. Its description says the camera is not used in that version, so this is not evidence of an operating camera-equipped feeder. The author says the dispenser is intended for flakes and that pellets were not tried. Do not assume the SG90 is interchangeable with the large continuous-rotation servo in the integrated design: the projects describe different mechanisms. See the SG90 feeder project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stepper and helical-shaft example
A Hackaday.io build describes an ESP32 receiving control values over MQTT and a stepper motor driving a helical shaft supported by bearings. Its instructions call for two 5V supplies: one for the motor driver and one for the LCD and ESP32. This is a distinct mechanism example, not a demonstrated upgrade or drop-in alternative for either servo feeder. Read the Hackaday.io build instructions.
Control and camera access are separate questions
The integrated ESP32-CAM project describes uploading firmware, reading the assigned IP address in the serial monitor, then browsing to that address to check operation. That establishes a local-network workflow; it does not establish secure access from outside the home. The M5StickC project describes USB/serial control, including f for a feeding sequence and d for one dispense. The Hackaday design uses MQTT messages to control an ESP32. These are different control paths, not interchangeable setup instructions.

Do not expose a device web interface or MQTT broker directly to the public internet on the strength of these project examples. Their descriptions do not document a security review or safe remote-network configuration. A working local control path should not be mistaken for a secure internet-facing system.

- Verify the build safely. Check the board and servo documentation against the wiring and power arrangement for your exact parts. Keep electronics and mains adapters protected from splashes.
- Bench-test into a catch cup. Run repeated dispensing cycles without feeding the tank. Observe whether the mechanism jams or turns more than once per command.
- Check repeatability with the food you will use. Measure or otherwise inspect each dispense using your actual food. Do not infer pellet compatibility from a project that only describes flakes.
- Observe the aquarium during supervised use. Confirm that the feeder releases food as intended and that the camera view is useful for monitoring the tank.
- Arrange a human caretaker for absences. These project descriptions are not controlled validation studies and establish no tested unattended duration, failure probability, or feeding accuracy.
These checks are prudent build practices, not performance findings reported by the project authors. A camera may help you look at the tank, but it does not by itself verify that the right amount of food was dispensed or that the aquarium is otherwise healthy.

What these DIY examples can—and cannot—establish
- They show possible architectures: an ESP32-CAM integrated with a servo feeder, or a feeder paired with a separate Raspberry Pi camera.
- They show varied mechanisms and controls: continuous-rotation or micro servos, a stepper-driven helical shaft, local Wi-Fi, serial commands and MQTT.
- They do not establish universal food compatibility: one author specifies flakes and says pellets were not tried.
- They do not establish unattended-care performance: no cited project documentation supplies validated accuracy, long-term reliability or failure-rate results.
