For indoor laundry, choose a dehumidifier by matching its moisture-removal capacity and operating-temperature range to the drying room—not by room size alone. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. chart lists 30–50 pints per day for a small-to-medium wet space where a high moisture load such as laundry drying may be present. Treat that as a starting range, not a one-load sizing formula or a promise of drying time.
1. Estimate the room’s moisture load
Dehumidifier capacity is commonly stated in pints or liters removed per 24 hours. The amount a unit can remove depends on room size and how damp the space is before the unit runs. Laundry adds a substantial moisture load, so a room that seems small may still need more capacity than its floor area suggests.
ENERGY STAR’s current U.S. buying chart gives these capacity ranges:

These are chart ranges, not a calculation for a particular laundry load. They use U.S. pints-per-day ratings, so do not directly equate them with every other region’s rating convention. Check the capacity figure and test conditions on the specific model.

Rated capacity can change sharply with temperature and relative humidity (RH). National Energy Action’s 2025 report reproduces manufacturer data for one 12-liter-rated MeacoDry Arete One: 5.23 liters per day at 20°C and 60% RH, compared with 12.18 liters per day at 30°C and 80% RH. That example illustrates why a headline capacity is not a guarantee of extraction in your room; it is not a conversion or typical result for other models.
2. Check the room temperature and efficiency
Compare the room’s usual temperature with the model’s specified operating range. ENERGY STAR advises considering a unit specified for lower temperatures if the space is typically below 65°F. Frost can form on a compressor unit’s condensing coils in colder conditions, causing it to cycle without removing moisture. Check the manual for its low-temperature limits and frost-protection behavior rather than assuming a model will perform well in a cold utility room.

Where available, compare integrated energy factor (IEF), measured in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour (L/kWh). ENERGY STAR says a higher IEF generally means greater efficiency. It also states that ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifiers are 20% more efficient than non-certified models; this is the organization’s published comparison, not a guaranteed 20% reduction in a household’s electricity bill. ENERGY STAR lists its current dehumidifier certification specification as effective October 1, 2025.
There is no basis here for saying one dehumidifier technology is always best. Choose by the conditions in your drying space and the specific model’s stated performance and operating limits.

3. Understand what “laundry mode” does
Laundry mode is not a standardized feature. Its behavior varies by model, so read the product manual before relying on it for unattended drying.
- De’Longhi describes its laundry function as running maximum dehumidification and ventilation continuously while bypassing the humidistat.
- Mitsubishi Electric describes a specific intelligent mode that adjusts airflow, monitors humidity, estimates drying time, and stops automatically. Its stated operation time is approximately one to twelve hours depending on humidity and load.
Those are manufacturer-specific descriptions, not a shared definition. Confirm whether the unit runs continuously, targets a humidity level, uses a timer, or stops based on a sensor—and whether you must restart it if the clothes are still damp.

4. Set up the drying area for airflow
- Choose a small room and close it off. Close the drying-room door and windows while the dehumidifier runs. ENERGY STAR recommends closing doors and windows for efficient dehumidification.
- Leave space around the appliance. Follow the manual’s required clearance around its air intake and outlet; keep the unit close enough to serve the rack without blocking circulation.
- Arrange clothes with gaps. Space garments on a rack so air can pass between them. Give thick items and pockets extra attention, since they can hold moisture.
- Consider a circulation fan. A fan can help move air through the clothes; it supports airflow, while the dehumidifier removes moisture from the room air.
- Bring laundry in when it is dry. Do not leave it in the room longer than needed.
In a National Energy Action report, a mixed laundry load dried in about six hours with a dehumidifier and fan at full speed in the report’s test setup. This is a result from that particular setup, not a general drying-time estimate. The same report gives an example in which a heated rail added substantial electricity use: 150–200 W for the dehumidifier and 230–330 W for the rail, potentially reaching 5 kWh over five hours. Those figures are specific to the report’s example; they do not establish that every heated rail or setup has the same consumption.
No broadly applicable comparison here establishes that a dehumidifier always costs less to run than a tumble dryer. To compare your options, use measured energy per load and your electricity tariff rather than relying on a general savings claim.

5. Choose a practical way to handle the water
A portable dehumidifier may collect water in a removable bucket and shut off when it is full. Some models support a hose that drains to a floor drain or sump. A bucket can suit shorter sessions if you can empty it; a supported hose connection can reduce interruptions during longer runs, provided the hose drains properly.
- Use only a drainage method supported by the model, and follow its instructions for bucket placement or hose routing.
- Keep water, drain hoses, power cords, and outlets safely separated. ENERGY STAR advises using a properly grounded outlet and keeping water disposal and hoses away from electrical circuits and cords.
- Avoid routing a long hose where it could create a trip hazard.
- Keep laundry and drips away from electrical parts. Allow the airflow clearance required by the appliance design.
6. Know when a room unit may not be enough
If the house has consistently high humidity throughout, or there is a persistent moisture source, a room dehumidifier should not be treated as a permanent fix for the underlying problem. ENERGY STAR says a whole-home dehumidifier may be appropriate in humid climates, homes with central air, and well-sealed homes where humidity is consistently above 55% throughout the house; it recommends proper sizing and professional installation. That is a separate system and installation decision from choosing a portable unit for one drying room.
