They take different routes to older games: one works on the program, the other on the system that runs it. Recompilation is a related third term: it translates a program for another system.
What decompilation, emulation, and recompilation mean
Decompilation reconstructs the program
A decompilation project analyzes a compiled game executable and tries to reconstruct source code. Depending on the project, the aim may be to match the original binary or produce code that is more readable or portable. Reconstructing code does not, by itself, make a finished playable game for a new platform. Decomp Games explains these project goals and distinctions.
Emulation recreates the original system
An emulator reproduces the behavior of a machine or system, allowing the original software to run in an environment for which it was not originally made. The game remains the original program; the emulator supplies a software version of its original computing environment. Nintendo’s support FAQ describes emulator software in similar terms.
Recompilation translates the program
Recompilation translates a game program into code for another system. A project may combine generated code with a runtime and patches. It is distinct from decompilation, which reconstructs source, and emulation, which recreates machine behavior. A port or engine recreation may involve yet another implementation approach. Project terminology can vary, so check what the project actually does rather than relying on its label. Decomp Games’ guide discusses the distinctions, and Recompendium’s project pages show a project-specific recompilation approach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the approaches differ in practice
| Approach | What it recreates or changes | What happens to the original game |
|---|---|---|
| Emulation | The behavior of the original machine or system | The original game program runs in the recreated environment |
| Decompilation | Source code reconstructed from the compiled executable | The code is analyzed and reconstructed; a playable version for another platform is not guaranteed |
| Recompilation | A translation of the game program for another system, sometimes combined with a runtime and patches | The program may run through a new code path; the project may still require original game data |
These are technical categories, not guarantees of compatibility, accuracy, completeness, or speed. The outcome depends on the specific game, edition, project, supported platforms, and required data. The sources above do not establish a universal performance comparison between emulation and recompilation.
Why a decompilation is not automatically a playable port
Reconstructed source code is an intermediate result, not necessarily a complete release. To run on a different platform, a project may also need recompilation, a runtime, platform-specific changes, or a port. Even then, the code may not include the original art, sound, levels, or other game data. Some projects provide code only and expect users to supply game data; Recompendium describes that requirement for its own projects, so it should not be assumed of every project. Check Recompendium’s project documentation for its stated requirements.

Before choosing or trying a project, look up its current documentation for the supported game edition and platforms, required files, project completeness, and any stated compatibility or performance claims. Do not infer those details from the words “decompilation,” “recompilation,” or “emulator.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Game files and legality are separate from the technical method
A project’s method does not determine whether a particular game file is lawful to obtain or use. Nintendo’s support FAQ states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s stated position about pirate copies of its games, not a universal legal rule covering every jurisdiction, emulator, or reverse-engineering project. Consult Nintendo’s FAQ, the project’s current file requirements, and the rules that apply where you live. Use an authorized game copy; do not assume a code-only release includes permission to obtain the game data elsewhere.

A practical way to compare two projects
- Identify the technique. Does the project recreate the original machine, reconstruct source code, translate the game program, or implement a compatible engine?
- Check the exact game and edition. Confirm that the project supports the version you have; compatibility may differ by edition.
- Read the data requirements. Find out whether the project supplies game content or requires you to provide it, and use an authorized copy.
- Check maturity and purpose. A decompilation may focus on understanding or matching code and may be incomplete; a port or recompilation is more directly aimed at running on another system.
- Look for project-specific evidence. Treat performance, compatibility, and feature statements as claims about that project and configuration, not as properties guaranteed by its category.
