An embedded database is a database engine integrated with an application rather than run as a separate service that the application contacts. It is a good fit when an application or device owns its data and needs straightforward local storage; a client/server database is usually a better choice when many clients share data remotely, writes must happen concurrently at high volume, or centralized management is important.
What an embedded database is
“Embedded” describes how the database engine is deployed in relation to the application, not a universal file format or feature set. The application uses an engine that runs as part of its software or on the same device, instead of sending queries to a separate database server.
SQLite is a widely used example. The SQLite project calls it “an embedded SQL database engine” and describes it as a serverless software library: it has no separate server process, and it reads and writes ordinary disk files. A complete SQLite database can be kept in one file. SQLite: About and SQLite: Appropriate Uses
That architecture differs from a client/server database, where an application connects to a distinct database service. Other embedded databases may have different formats and capabilities, so SQLite’s specific behavior should not be assumed to apply to every embedded engine.

When an embedded database is a good fit
Data belongs to one application or device
Choose an embedded database when one application or device is the main owner of its data and keeping storage close to the code is useful. Examples include a desktop application storing user data locally or device software retaining operational data. SQLite’s usage guide specifically describes local application storage and embedded-device or IoT use cases. SQLite: Appropriate Uses
You want structured, portable application data
A database file can be a practical application file format when data has relationships or needs to be queried. SQLite documents using a structured database file in place of custom XML, JSON, CSV, or proprietary formats. This can simplify managing related records, though it is not automatically the best choice for every file or interchange task. SQLite: Appropriate Uses and SQLite: Features

Low operational overhead matters
For suitable local workloads, an embedded engine avoids operating a separate database service. That can reduce setup and administration when there is no need for a centrally managed shared database. The trade-off is that the application and its deployment take responsibility for the local database and its access patterns.
When client/server is a better choice
Data is shared across a network
If the application code and database are separated by a network, SQLite’s usage guide recommends considering a client/server engine. Giving multiple computers direct access to a database file over a network can add latency and relies on filesystem locking behaving correctly. A database service is generally better suited to coordinating remote clients. SQLite: Appropriate Uses

Many writes need to happen at once
SQLite permits simultaneous readers but only one writer at a time per database file. That can work when writes are brief and can take turns; sustained workloads requiring many simultaneous writers are a reason to consider client/server. This is a SQLite-specific limit, not a definition of embedded databases as a category. SQLite: Appropriate Uses and SQLite: Frequently Asked Questions
You need centralized operations, multiple servers, or room to grow
SQLite’s guide advises evaluating client/server for high-volume, write-intensive websites and deployments that need multiple application servers. It also flags data approaching terabyte scale or no longer fitting comfortably in one file as reasons to consider another arrangement. These are SQLite’s recommendations for its own use cases, not universal thresholds for all embedded databases. SQLite: Appropriate Uses

Process isolation is important
A separate database server can provide a boundary between database memory and client application memory. SQLite notes that this separation can better protect the database from bugs in a client application. Whether that matters depends on the system’s security and reliability requirements. | Question | Embedded is favored when… | Client/server is favored when… |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the data? | It is local to the application or device. | It is remote and shared across a network. |
| Who accesses it? | One application or device is the main owner. | Many independent clients need coordinated shared access. |
| How do writes behave? | Writes are brief and can take turns; for SQLite, only one writer per database file can write at a time. | The workload needs many concurrent writers or centralized coordination. |
| What operations are needed? | A compact local component and limited service administration are priorities. | A managed shared service, multiple application servers, or centralized control is needed. |
| What scale and topology are expected? | A local database file suits the application’s needs. | Data growth or deployment topology calls for centralized storage or multiple servers. |
| Is process separation valuable? | Running storage in the application’s environment is acceptable. | Separating database and client process memory is an important isolation boundary. |
Use these as workload questions rather than a universal size or client-count cutoff. The appropriate choice depends on the selected engine and how the application actually reads, writes, and shares data.

A practical starting point
- Start with ownership and location: if one application or device owns local data, an embedded database is a reasonable candidate. If clients need to share remote data, evaluate client/server first.
- Check the write pattern: determine whether writes can be brief and coordinated or whether sustained simultaneous writes are required. For SQLite, plan around one writer per database file at a time.
- Check operations and growth: decide whether a local component remains practical or whether central service management, multiple application servers, or a different storage topology is needed.
- Evaluate isolation: consider whether a separate database process should protect the database from problems in client application memory.
- Verify the chosen engine: use its own documentation and test against the application’s expected workload rather than applying SQLite’s limits to another product.
