Save the original and revised itineraries, then check exactly what changed before you accept a refund or replacement flight. Your options depend on the route, operating carrier, size and type of change, when you were notified, and whether you still want to travel. A schedule change does not automatically mean you qualify for compensation.
What should I do first?
- Save the records. Keep your original booking confirmation, ticket receipt, booking reference, the airline’s notice, and the revised itinerary. Take screenshots of changed times, dates, airports, connections, or cabin details, and note when you received the notice.
- Compare the complete trip. Check departure and arrival times and dates, airports, connection count and length, operating carrier, cabin, and whether the new itinerary still meets any accessibility needs. Review onward flights and ground transport arrangements too.
- Ask the airline what remedies it offers. Ask whether it treats the change as significant or as a cancellation, and what rerouting or refund choices are available. If an agency issued your ticket, contact it as well. For US agency bookings, the Department of Transportation (DOT) advises consumers to contact the agent directly about refunds before contacting the airline: DOT’s ticket-buying guidance.
- Choose only after deciding whether you still need to travel. Compare replacement itineraries before requesting or accepting a refund. Under the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) stated options, choosing a refund means you are no longer entitled to rerouting or care; EU cancellation guidance also describes a choice among reimbursement and rerouting options.
- Get the decision in writing. If the answer is unclear, ask the airline or agent to identify the rule and option it is applying. Keep names, dates, and case numbers. If a covered claim is rejected, use the relevant regulator or dispute channel; the European Commission lists national enforcement bodies on its air passenger rights page.
Am I entitled to a refund?
There is no single worldwide threshold for when a schedule change entitles you to a refund. The applicable rules vary by jurisdiction and can depend on the route, operating carrier, change, and purchase channel. The criteria below describe official guidance for the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union; they are not interchangeable.
United States
Under current DOT guidance, you are entitled to a ticket-price refund if the airline significantly changes or delays your flight and you choose not to travel or accept a credit, voucher, rebooking, or other alternative compensation. DOT’s examples of significant changes include:
- A departure at least 3 hours earlier for a domestic itinerary, or at least 6 hours earlier for an international itinerary.
- An arrival at least 3 hours later for a domestic itinerary, or at least 6 hours later for an international itinerary.
- A different origin or destination airport, more connection points, or a downgrade.
- Specified accessibility-related changes for travelers with disabilities.
These are DOT criteria, not universal airline-change thresholds; check the agency’s full refund guidance against your itinerary. For a qualifying direct airline purchase, DOT says the refund is automatic if you do not accept the changed flight or an alternative. Its automatic-refund guidance gives a deadline of 7 business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment types. A separate 24-hour cancellation/refund requirement does not apply to online travel agency and other agent bookings, so DOT advises contacting the agent first about refunds. Watch for messages from the airline or booking agent.

United Kingdom
For a flight covered by UK passenger-rights legislation, CAA guidance describes three options after cancellation: a refund, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting at a later date convenient to you, subject to availability. The CAA says you may not be able to change your choice once you commit to an option, and choosing a refund means you are not also entitled to rerouting or care. Coverage depends on the route and carrier, so a UK connection alone does not establish that these rules apply. See the CAA’s Summer 2026 consumer advice.
European Union
For cancellations covered by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 8 provides a choice between reimbursement for the relevant unused journey (and, in specified circumstances, a return flight to the first departure point), rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or rerouting later at your convenience if seats are available. Official EU guidance says cancellation includes abandoning the original schedule for another scheduled flight, as well as bringing departure forward by more than 1 hour. Compensation is separate from these remedies and conditional: notice timing, proposed rerouting, distance, and extraordinary circumstances can matter. A schedule change alone does not establish compensation eligibility. The regulation is available at EUR-Lex.

How should I compare the replacement flight and other options?
Compare the practical impact of the revised itinerary with what you booked. These details can affect whether a refund rule applies, which authority’s rules are relevant, or whether the replacement still works for you.

What if the airline offers to rebook me?
Do not judge an alternative by departure time alone. Confirm the full route, arrival date and time, airports, connection details, operating carrier, cabin, and any accessibility arrangements. Ask whether other rerouting options are available if the proposed itinerary does not work. If you would rather not travel, check whether your specific itinerary and purchase qualify for a refund before accepting a replacement, credit, or voucher.
