For a specific appliance, compare its labelled energy use and cycle duration rather than relying on a universal estimate.
Which method is faster?
There is no consistent speed winner. Outdoor drying depends on conditions such as weather and exposure, while a dryer’s stated duration applies to a particular programme and load. A sunny, exposed clothesline and a dryer running a long or unsuitable cycle are not a fair comparison.
For a practical comparison, keep the load and desired dryness as similar as possible. Check the dryer’s product label for the duration of its specified programme; treat that as programme-specific information, not a promise for every setting or load. The available sources do not establish a universal sun-drying time.
Which uses less energy?
For the drying step, air drying avoids operating a tumble dryer. A powered dryer uses electricity, with the amount depending on its model and programme. That is a direct appliance comparison, not a complete measure of household energy: the sources do not quantify possible added heating or dehumidification associated with drying laundry indoors.

European Commission estimates for EU laundry dryers in 2020 illustrate why dryer type matters. They are historical population estimates, not specifications for a particular current appliance:

These figures compare dryer categories, not a dryer against sun drying. For an individual appliance, use its own label or product information. The European Commission’s tumble-dryer guidance also describes a potential reduction of around 60% from switching to one of the most efficient dryers; that is a conditional comparison between dryers, not an estimate of savings from air drying.

How to compare a specific dryer
Use the EU energy label where applicable
For products sold in the EU, the current label shows weighted energy consumption per 100 drying cycles and the duration of the full-load eco programme. Those values describe the eco programme; a different selected programme may use a different amount of energy or time. Since 1 July 2025, EU labels use an A–G efficiency scale. See the EU energy-labelling regulation and the ecodesign regulation for the rules and measurement provisions.
For US models, compare efficiency measures and useful features
ENERGY STAR’s Combined Energy Factor (CEF) is a dryer-efficiency measure: a higher CEF indicates greater efficiency. It is useful for comparing eligible dryer models, but it is not a direct comparison with outdoor drying. ENERGY STAR also recommends choosing a drum that lets clothes tumble freely with room for air circulation, automatic shutoff to help prevent overdrying, and regular lint-filter cleaning. Consult ENERGY STAR’s dryer guidance and its key product criteria for current information.

What affects the practical choice?
- Outdoor conditions: Weather and exposure affect how quickly laundry dries outside.
- Indoor setup: An indoor air-drying option avoids running a dryer, but the sources do not quantify its total household-energy effect when heating or dehumidification is involved.
- Load and programme: Dryer duration and energy vary with the appliance, load and selected cycle.
- Garment requirements: Check each garment’s care label. The cited sources do not establish fabric-specific effects of sun or tumble drying.
When outdoor drying is impractical, a drying rack is another air-drying option. The European Commission recommends using a rack instead of a tumble dryer where possible, without promising a particular drying time.
Ways to reduce dryer energy use
- Remove more water in the washer. The European Commission advises using the maximum spin speed recommended for the washing machine and load.
- Choose a suitable, efficient dryer. Compare the specific model’s label or efficiency measure, and select a programme appropriate for the load and desired result.
- Allow room for airflow. ENERGY STAR recommends a drum large enough for clothes to tumble freely.
- Use automatic shutoff and clean the lint filter. These ENERGY STAR recommendations can help avoid unnecessary running and support proper airflow.
What EU dryer rules mean for shoppers
The European Commission states that, from 1 July 2025, only tumble dryers featuring heat-pump technology may be placed on the EU market, and the A–G energy label must be displayed. This is an EU market rule; it should not be assumed to apply in other regions. The Commission’s product page also estimates up to 15 TWh of electricity savings across the EU between 2020 and 2040 from the relevant policy measures. That is a projected EU-wide figure, not an individual household saving or a sun-drying comparison.
