To plot live Arduino sensor data in Python, send newline-terminated readings over the board’s serial connection, read and parse each line with pySerial, then update an existing chart on a schedule. The sketch and Python program must use the same baud rate and the correct serial port. This is live visualization for monitoring—not hard real-time plotting with deterministic timing guarantees.
Choose the simplest tool that meets your goal
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Arduino IDE Serial Plotter | Quickly checking one or a few values from a sketch. | It visualizes incoming serial data without a custom Python interface; it is not a Python workflow. Arduino Serial Plotter documentation. |
| Python with Matplotlib | Custom processing, axes, logging, controls, or integration with Python analysis. | Requires a serial-reading and plotting loop. Matplotlib’s animation API can update existing plot elements. Matplotlib animation API. |
| Python with PyQtGraph | A GUI-based, instrument-style display with multiple traces or a configurable displayed history. | It is another implementation choice, not evidence of a guaranteed speed advantage. PyQtGraph, PySide6, and pySerial project. |
For a basic hardware check, the IDE’s Serial Plotter can help establish that the sketch is emitting plot-friendly data before you troubleshoot Python. Arduino’s microphone amplitude tutorial illustrates a hardware-specific example using an Arduino Zero, MKRZero, or MKR1000 with an I2S microphone breakout; its wiring and board requirements are specific to that example. Arduino I2S amplitude tutorial.
Set up the serial data contract
The Arduino sketch and Python parser must agree on what each record means. Start with one value per line, such as a sensor reading followed by a newline. For multiple channels, choose a consistent delimiter or structured format and document the field order, names, and units. Keep the format stable so the plotting code can decode each record predictably.
- Use a clear record boundary, usually one complete line per sample.
- For delimited fields, define the column order and how missing or invalid values are represented.
- For JSON, parse each complete line as JSON and handle malformed records without ending the display loop.
- Print raw received lines while debugging: this distinguishes a serial-format problem from a chart-update problem.
The pySerial documentation’s Arduino example demonstrates a DHT22 sending JSON readings that Python decodes and logs to CSV. pySerial Arduino example.

Connect the board and match its serial settings
Connect a compatible Arduino board to the computer and connect a sensor as required by that sensor and board. You may need a USB data cable with the connector used by the board. A DHT22 is one example used in the pySerial integration example; a breadboard and jumper wires may be useful depending on the hardware. Existing compatible hardware is enough to learn the Python plotting workflow, and hardware is not required to practice parsing and plotting sample data.
- In the Arduino sketch, initialize serial communication with a baud rate, for example
Serial.begin(9600);. Choose a rate suitable for your application. - Print each complete record with a line terminator, such as
Serial.println(value);. Confirm that the output format matches the parser you intend to write. - Upload the sketch, then identify the board’s selected port in the Arduino IDE or your operating system’s device list.
- In Python, open that port with the same baud rate used in
Serial.begin(...).
Port names vary by system and board. Windows commonly uses a COM name; macOS commonly shows a /dev/cu.* device; Linux commonly shows /dev/ttyACM* or /dev/ttyUSB*. These are examples, not guaranteed names. The educational serial demo explains these platform conventions. Arduino serial-to-Python demo.

On some Arduino setups, opening the serial port resets the board. One integration example waits about two seconds after opening before relying on incoming data; treat that as a board-dependent allowance, not a universal timing rule. pySerial Arduino example.
Read and parse records in Python
Install pySerial in the Python environment you will use, then open the selected port with a bounded timeout. A line-reading approach expects the board to send a line terminator; the timeout prevents a missing terminator or stalled port from blocking forever. Decode bytes, remove line endings, and reject empty or invalid input before attempting to plot it.

import serial
PORT = "COM3" # Replace with the port for your board
BAUD = 9600 # Must match Serial.begin(...) in the sketch
with serial.Serial(PORT, BAUD, timeout=1) as board:
while True:
raw = board.readline()
if not raw:
continue # Timeout: no complete line arrived
line = raw.decode("utf-8", errors="replace").strip()
if not line:
continue
try:
value = float(line)
except ValueError:
print("Ignoring invalid record:", repr(line))
continue
print(value)
Replace PORT with the actual device name. This minimal loop prints parsed scalar values; it does not yet draw a chart. For multiple delimited fields, split the line and validate the expected number and type of fields. For JSON records, use Python’s JSON parser and catch decoding errors so one malformed record does not terminate acquisition.
Update a chart without rebuilding it for every reading
With Matplotlib, create the figure and line once, then update that line’s data as new values arrive. Its animation API is designed for updating plot artists. For a long-running display, retain only a chosen number of recent points or show a bounded time window; continually adding every reading to the visible history can make rendering increasingly demanding.

A straightforward demonstration can read and update in one loop, but a blocking serial read can make a graphical interface unresponsive. Use a finite serial timeout and, if the display stalls or the stream is busy, separate acquisition from drawing: collect samples in one thread or process and refresh the chart periodically from the GUI. Reduce redraw frequency or the amount of displayed history if the chart cannot keep up with the incoming stream.
PyQtGraph is a reasonable alternative when you want a Qt-based instrument interface. A public pySerial/PyQtGraph project describes multiple series, configurable update rate, maximum displayed points, and packet styles. These features show an implementation option, not a controlled performance comparison. Choose based on GUI integration, familiarity, trace count, and behavior with your own stream.

Save readings when analysis matters later
A live chart is useful for observation, but it is not a substitute for a data log. If you will inspect, compare, or process readings later, write parsed records to CSV or another suitable file as they arrive. Include a header for multi-channel data and use names and units that preserve what each column represents. The pySerial DHT22 example shows decoding readings and logging temperature and humidity to CSV. pySerial Arduino example.
Troubleshoot blank, garbled, or frozen plots
- No data appears: verify the selected serial port, matching baud rate, and that the board is printing newline-terminated records. Check whether another program has the port open. If opening the port resets the board, allow its startup output to arrive before relying on readings.
- Values are garbled or rejected: print the raw bytes or decoded line with
repr(...). Compare the actual record with the expected delimiter, field order, encoding, and numeric format; check port and baud agreement first. - The chart freezes: use a bounded read timeout and avoid waiting indefinitely for data in the GUI thread. Separate acquisition and display, redraw periodically rather than for every incoming byte, or reduce the visible point count based on observed responsiveness.
- The display becomes sluggish over time: keep the retained point count or visible time window bounded and update existing plot elements rather than creating new windows or artists for each sample.
There is no universal maximum sample or refresh rate established for this workflow. Throughput and responsiveness depend on the board, serial configuration, record length, parser, plotting toolkit, and host computer; assess them with the actual application rather than relying on an unsupported rate promise.
