It is not a universal one-command installer: its documented setup assumes Raspberry Pi OS with a desktop, a Wayland/Wayfire runtime, internet access during installation, and an unused port 80.
What PiOSK does
PiOSK is designed for a kiosk that cycles through webpages. After setup, you can use a browser on another device on the same local network to edit the kiosk’s URL list and apply changes. At least one URL is required. The project began as a wrapper around Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial; its author, Soumya Deb, describes the current result in the PiOSK README as an early checkpoint rather than a finished, broadly tested product.
This makes PiOSK useful when you want a fullscreen display of changing webpages and a way to manage those pages without editing the Pi directly. It does not establish that every site, display, Raspberry Pi model, or operating-system image will work equally well.
Check compatibility and prepare the hardware
PiOSK documents assumptions rather than a model-by-model compatibility matrix. It is intended for Raspberry Pi hardware running Raspberry Pi OS with a desktop environment. The setup needs internet access, and runtime assumes Wayland with Wayfire, the same user account used for desktop auto-login, and an available port 80. The project recommends Debian Bookworm-based images for Wayland/Wayfire support. Other distributions or single-board computers may work, but the project says they are not tested.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a Raspberry Pi
PiOSK names the Pi Zero 2 W as a fitting option, cautions that older Pi Zero models may struggle with Chromium, and says a Pi 4 or Pi 5 may be more than necessary. These are project recommendations, not published benchmark results. Separately, Raspberry Pi’s official kiosk tutorial says kiosk browsing needs a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM. That is general guidance for browser-based kiosk use, not a PiOSK-specific test.
Plan the screen and connections
A physical kiosk needs a Raspberry Pi, suitable power supply, microSD card, display cable, and monitor or compatible display—the hardware categories listed by Raspberry Pi’s tutorial. Match the display connection and resolution to the installation. PiOSK says webpage content below 1024×600 may not display ideally on some sites; actual results depend on the website. It also notes that DSI displays can require additional driver setup.

Install PiOSK and configure the kiosk
PiOSK’s documented workflow starts in the Raspberry Pi desktop environment. Read the current instructions in the project README before running its setup command, since that command downloads a script and pipes it to sudo bash, giving the script administrator privileges. Remote SSH is optional; it is not a substitute for the desktop-session assumptions.
- Prepare the desktop: configure desktop auto-login and screen-timeout settings, and confirm the Pi has network access.
- Run the README’s setup command: use the command shown in the project’s current instructions. The documented installation clones the repository under the installing user’s home directory.
- Open the dashboard from another device: on the same local network, visit the Pi’s IP address using port 80 (for example,
http://<Pi-IP-address>/). - Set the pages: replace or edit the sample URL list in the dashboard, ensure it contains at least one URL, and apply the changes.
Port 80 is a practical installation constraint: if another service on the Pi already uses it, the dashboard may conflict. Resolve that conflict before relying on the kiosk setup.

Understand the maintenance and security trade-offs
The README does not document a direct update workflow. Its stated approach is to uninstall and reinstall; if you want to restore your settings, preserve the backup configuration file as directed by the project. Cleanup also leaves dependency packages installed by default, so uninstalling PiOSK does not necessarily remove every package it added.
The project suggests disabling interfaces you do not need and considering OverlayFS as basic kiosk hardening. These are recommendations, not evidence of a security audit. In particular, a dashboard reachable on the local network should be treated as an administrative surface: restrict network access to people and devices you trust, and avoid exposing it to the public internet.

When PiOSK is a good fit
- Consider it for a Raspberry Pi web display where a rotating list of pages and local-network configuration are useful, and where the documented desktop and Wayland/Wayfire assumptions fit your setup.
- Choose another approach or test first if you need a supported non-Raspberry Pi platform, a different runtime environment, a documented direct-update process, or guaranteed compatibility with a specific display or website.
- Use Raspberry Pi’s tutorial as a separate baseline if you want to follow the official kiosk setup rather than PiOSK’s dashboard-based workflow. The tutorial and PiOSK offer different setup guidance; neither source reports controlled reliability or performance comparisons.
