Usually, no. In the United States, a lower fare appearing after you buy a ticket does not by itself give you a general right to a refund of the difference. You may still be able to change your ticket or cancel and rebook, depending on the airline, booking channel, fare conditions and timing. Compare any fees and lost ticket value with the potential savings before you act.
Does a lower fare qualify you for a refund?
No general U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rule requires an airline to return the difference just because the same flight later costs less. The DOT describes refund rights for situations such as a flight cancellation or a significant schedule change or delay when a traveler rejects the alternatives offered. Those disruption-related rights are separate from an ordinary fare drop.
Airlines may offer voluntary options, but their terms vary. Depending on the ticket, those options can include changing to a lower fare, cancelling for travel credit, or cancelling and booking again. A lower fare is an opportunity to check your ticket’s terms—not a guarantee of money back.
What the 24-hour rule does—and does not—cover
For qualifying reservations made directly with an airline at least seven days before departure, the airline must offer either a full-refund cancellation within 24 hours of booking or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare. It does not have to offer both options, and the rule is not a price-match promise or a general right to make free changes.

The DOT says this airline requirement does not apply to reservations made through online travel agencies, travel agents or other third-party sellers. If you booked through an agent, check that seller’s terms. The 24-hour window is time-sensitive, so confirm eligibility promptly rather than assuming you can use it later.
Refund, credit and lower-fare change are different outcomes
A refund to your original payment method, an airline travel credit and a voluntary change to a lower fare are not interchangeable. The 24-hour cancellation option, when it applies, provides a full refund. A carrier’s separate lower-fare policy may instead change the ticket or provide value subject to restrictions. Before accepting a credit or change, confirm its amount, how it can be used and when it expires.

How to check whether rebooking will save you money
- Read your confirmation. Identify the ticket seller, airline, fare family and the change and cancellation conditions that apply to your booking.
- Check the 24-hour option. If you booked directly with an airline less than 24 hours ago and departure is at least seven days away, ask whether the reservation qualifies for the airline’s refund cancellation option or a hold. For a third-party booking, check that seller’s policy instead.
- Compare the same trip. Search the exact itinerary and compare the total fare and ticket conditions, not just the headline price. The lower result may have different terms or may no longer be available by the time you act.
- Ask about your choices. Contact the airline or seller to ask whether it can reprice or change the ticket, cancel it for credit, or cancel and rebook. Get the value and restrictions in writing when possible.
- Calculate net savings before cancelling. Subtract any fees and the value you would lose through a restricted or expiring credit. Do not give up your existing ticket until you understand what happens to it and have confirmed the replacement fare is still available.
The DOT’s ticket-buying guidance notes that, in some cases, requesting a refund and rebooking may cost less than paying a change fee and any fare difference. It also warns that ticket prices can change quickly. That is guidance on comparing costs, not a promise that a traveler qualifies for a refund.
When the airline changes or cancels your flight
If the airline cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change or delay, assess your options under the separate refund rules for disruptions. That situation is not the same as finding a cheaper fare for an otherwise unchanged flight. If you reject the alternatives offered, you may qualify for a refund under DOT guidance.

This explanation covers U.S. DOT guidance. Consumer protections elsewhere may differ, and airline policies and fare conditions can change. Before cancelling, verify the current terms with both the carrier and the seller named on your confirmation.
