Your credit history, cosigner, and choice of fixed or variable rate can affect a private student-loan refinance offer. Before accepting one, compare the personalized APR and fees, repayment term, monthly payment, total repayment, and cosigner terms. First identify whether the offer would replace any federal loans: refinancing federal debt with a private lender gives up federal benefits and protections.
How does my credit score affect student loan refinancing?
Private lenders use credit history and other underwriting factors to assess applications and set rates. Stronger credit may help you qualify for a lower rate, but official consumer guidance does not establish a universal minimum credit score for refinancing. Approval standards and offers vary by lender, so treat an advertised rate floor as something other than a prediction of your own offer. The CFPB explains the distinction between federal consolidation and private refinancing in its student-loan consolidation and refinancing guide.
Can a cosigner help me qualify or get a lower rate?
A cosigner with a stronger credit record may improve the chance of qualifying or receiving a lower rate. But a cosigner is not just a reference: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “Co-signers are equally responsible and legally obligated to repay the loan,” in its student-loan cosigner guidance.
If payments are late or the loan defaults, both the borrower’s and cosigner’s credit may be affected. The cosigner may also face collection efforts or legal action. Both parties should understand that responsibility before applying.

Can I remove a cosigner later?
Some private loans allow cosigner release, but there is no standard rule that applies to every lender. Check the loan agreement or ask the lender or servicer what criteria apply. Requirements may include a record of on-time payments, a credit review, and a separate application; the exact conditions are lender-specific. The CFPB outlines this issue in its cosigner-release guidance.
Are fixed or variable rates better?
A fixed rate stays the same over the life of the loan. A variable rate can change, which may also change the payment. The right choice depends on your tolerance for payment changes and the terms of the actual offer—not just the initial rate. The CFPB describes student-loan rate types in its interest-rate guidance.

Compare the APR and fees as well as the rate type. The APR helps reflect the cost of borrowing, while fees can affect the overall cost. Review how long repayment will take and the total amount you would repay under the offer.
Will refinancing lower my payment and save me money?
Not necessarily. A longer repayment term can lower the monthly payment while increasing the total interest paid. Compare both the monthly payment and total repayment for your current loans and each written offer; include fees and account for any change in term. The CFPB discusses this trade-off in its private-loan consolidation guidance.

What if some of my loans are federal?
Federal Direct Consolidation and private refinancing are different transactions. A Direct Consolidation Loan combines eligible federal loans into a new federal loan. Its interest rate is based on the weighted average of the included loans’ rates, rounded up to the nearest one-eighth of a percentage point, according to Federal Student Aid.
Private refinancing replaces the debt with a private loan. If federal loans are included, the borrower gives up federal repayment and forgiveness benefits and other protections. The CFPB states in its Winter 2024 Supervisory Highlights: Special Edition Student Lending: “When borrowers refinance or consolidate these loans through a private lender, they lose these benefits and protections.” The report also describes examiners’ findings about lender marketing that misrepresented the loss of access to forgiveness.

Federal loans refinanced into private debt cannot be switched back into the original federal loans. Before signing, identify which loans would be included and check current federal repayment and forgiveness options that may apply to you.
Will shopping for refinance offers affect my credit score?
A loan application may lead to a hard inquiry. The CFPB’s general guidance on choosing a loan recommends completing applications within a two-week period to reduce the impact of multiple hard inquiries. This is guidance, not a guaranteed scoring result or a rule specific to every refinance lender. Ask each lender whether a rate check is a soft inquiry and when a hard inquiry occurs.

How should I compare written offers?
Compare the complete terms, not only the advertised interest-rate floor. A lower rate may not mean a lower overall cost if fees or a longer term change what you repay.
Quick Recap
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| APR and fees | Use the personalized offer and account for fees, rather than assuming an advertised minimum applies to you. |
| Rate type | Check whether the rate is fixed or variable and, for a variable rate, how changes could affect payments. |
| Term and payments | Compare the repayment term, monthly payment, and total amount repaid together. |
| Federal loans | Identify any federal debt being replaced and the protections or forgiveness options you would give up. |
| Cosigner terms | Review legal responsibility and any contract-specific conditions for release. |
| Credit checks | Ask whether the rate check is soft or hard and when a hard inquiry is made. |
