These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable implementations of one interface. AG Grid and Tabulator provide table or grid behavior with editing APIs; Handsontable emphasizes a spreadsheet-like experience; TanStack Table supplies logic and state while the application builds the visible and interactive table. The best choice is the one that matches the amount of UI and editing behavior your team wants to own.
How to choose an editable data grid for JavaScript
Decide how much editing UI you want included
If the component should provide editing behavior and editor extension points, start by evaluating AG Grid and Tabulator. If the interface should resemble a spreadsheet, evaluate Handsontable. If you want to define the markup, styling, focus behavior, and editing interactions yourself, TanStack Table is the headless option.
Match the editing model to the workflow
- Cell editing: useful when a user changes individual values within a grid. AG Grid and Tabulator document cell editor options.
- Row editing: AG Grid documents a full-row editing mode as well as cell editing.
- Conditional editing: Tabulator documents an
editableoption that can be a boolean or a callback, allowing editability to depend on application logic. - Custom interaction: AG Grid and Tabulator document custom editor routes. With TanStack Table, your application supplies the editor and update behavior.
Check framework and implementation ownership
Use the framework integration that fits the application rather than choosing on feature names alone. TanStack Table offers framework adapters and can also be used with @tanstack/table-core in vanilla JavaScript. Its headless design means the application must implement the visible table and interaction details, including editor behavior, validation, focus handling, and updates.

Verify advanced features and license terms
List the features the application actually requires, then check them against the exact library edition and release. AG Grid explicitly separates Community and Enterprise features. Handsontable documents non-commercial and commercial license categories, with commercial production use requiring a commercial license according to its cited licensing page. For Tabulator, the available 6.x editing documentation does not establish the current license terms, so confirm those for the release under consideration. Current prices are not established for these options here.
AG Grid: configurable grid editing
AG Grid lets a column definition enable editing with editable. Its documentation describes provided editors, custom editors, and default editor selection based on cell data types. For row-oriented workflows, it also documents full-row editing through editType = 'fullRow'. The current cell-editing documentation identifies version 36.2.0.

Consider AG Grid when you want a configurable data grid with built-in editing concepts and the option to extend editors. Before adopting it, map the required features to Community or Enterprise: AG Grid describes Community as free for production use without a license, while Enterprise requires a production license. Handsontable: a spreadsheet-like JavaScript grid
Handsontable presents itself as a JavaScript data-grid component with the familiar look and feel of a spreadsheet. Tabulator’s 6.x documentation says cell editing is provided by its edit module. It describes built-in editors for common value types and custom editor functions; a column can specify an editor, and editable can be a boolean or callback. The retrieved documentation identifies version 6.5.0.
Tabulator is worth evaluating when a table-oriented component with configurable cell editors fits your workflow. Do not infer current 6.x licensing from older documentation: verify the license for the exact release you plan to use.

TanStack Table: a headless foundation for custom editing
TanStack Table provides table logic and state APIs rather than finished markup, styling, or a complete table UI. It has official adapters for several frameworks and can be used in vanilla JavaScript through @tanstack/table-core. Its documentation’s editable-cell example uses an updateData function passed through table metadata as one way to apply updates.
Choose it when precise control over the UI is more valuable than receiving a ready-made spreadsheet or grid interaction. That control comes with implementation work: the application supplies cell editors, update handling, and the interaction details needed by its users.
