WebDAV extends HTTP so a client can work with remote files and their properties; Windows’ WebDAV Redirector can present a WebDAV URL as a mapped network drive. The drive letter is an access point to a remote server, not a guarantee that the location behaves like a local disk or an SMB share.
What WebDAV is
Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) adds methods, headers, and content types to HTTP for remote authoring and file management. Microsoft’s WebDAV overview identifies resource properties and locking among the capabilities it adds. These extensions let compatible clients and servers work with content over HTTP rather than treating the connection as an ordinary web page request.
WebDAV is a protocol, so both the client and the server need to support the relevant behavior. The server continues to control which resources are available and what permissions apply. Microsoft describes WebDAV as suitable for basic remotely mountable file-system use, not as a promise that every server or Windows application will support identical operations.
How a WebDAV client and server exchange files
A client sends requests to a server at a WebDAV URL, and the server responds according to its implementation, configuration, and permissions. Microsoft’s client-server overview and file-operation example illustrate a basic pattern: enumerate items at a known location, use PUT to write file content, and use GET to read it.

This describes the general request-and-response model, not a fixed sequence for every browse or edit. Applications may interact with the remote location differently, and server implementations may vary. WebDAV access also does not, by itself, mean that files are synchronized for offline use.
What Windows’ WebDAV Redirector does
Windows includes a WebDAV Redirector that lets a user access a WebDAV URL through a mapped network drive. Microsoft documents mapping the location with the Map Network Drive wizard or with NET USE at a command prompt. The redirector presents the remote resource to Windows applications through that drive interface; requests still travel to the WebDAV server, which processes them and enforces its own configuration and permissions.

The Windows WebClient service is part of the client-side setup and troubleshooting path. A successful drive mapping therefore depends on more than choosing a drive letter: the URL, redirector, service, server support, authentication, and access rights all have to line up.
Why a WebDAV drive can fail to map
Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector troubleshooting guidance lists several possible causes. Use the error as a clue, then check the relevant parts of the connection rather than assuming the server or credentials are solely at fault.

- Client service or redirector: Confirm that the WebClient service is running and that the WebDAV Redirector is installed.
- Server and address: Check that WebDAV is enabled on the server and that the URL points to the intended resource.
- Authentication and permissions: Verify the credentials and whether the account is allowed to access the location.
- Transport and authentication method: A Basic Authentication attempt over HTTP can be rejected or unavailable under Windows’ documented defaults.
Keep Basic Authentication off unencrypted HTTP
Microsoft warns that Basic Authentication can send a username and password in clear text. Its documented Windows behavior disables Basic Authentication by default for non-SSL WebDAV connections. Do not enable it over plain HTTP to work around a mapping failure; use a correctly configured HTTPS endpoint when credentials are involved. See Microsoft’s Basic Authentication guidance for WebDAV.
Consider the WinHTTP credential behavior
Some authentication failures can also involve how the client handles credentials. Microsoft explains that the WebDAV Redirector uses WinHTTP and, without a proxy, WinHTTP sends user credentials only in response to requests to local intranet sites. This can prevent access to a credential-protected web share in some situations; it is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every failed login. Why a mapped drive may be missing in a service or another logon
A mapped drive letter is associated with a logon session. A service or process running in a different security context should not assume it can use the same drive letter as the signed-in user. For the service scenario covered in Microsoft’s documentation, use a UNC path and grant the process appropriate privileges instead of relying on the user’s mapped letter.
