“Nipple mouse” is an irreverent nickname for the TrackPoint: the small pointing stick set among the keys on many ThinkPad keyboards. Press it to move the pointer without reaching for a touchpad or mouse. Whether that feels clever or like steering with a rubber nub is a matter of preference—not a settled verdict that trackpads are better for everyone.
What is the “nipple mouse”?
In Juan Buis’s 2017 HackerNoon opinion essay, “nipple mouse” means Lenovo’s TrackPoint, a pointing stick located in the middle of a ThinkPad keyboard. The nickname refers to its small, raised cap; Lenovo calls it a “pointing stick” and refers to replacement caps as “pointing-stick nonslip caps.”
Buis describes the device as a way to move the cursor while keeping your hands by the keyboard. His essay says IBM developed the device in the 1980s, refined it as TrackPoint for ThinkPads, and that Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad line in 2005. Those are historical claims made in the essay, rather than dates independently established by the Lenovo support material cited here.
Lenovo’s TrackPoint overview documents the feature as a pointing device and says it can also open the TrackPoint Quick Menu app. The overview describes the center stick and three physical buttons below the keyboard.

How do you use a TrackPoint?
The basic idea is pressure rather than a swipe: press the cap in the direction you want the pointer to move. Lenovo’s instructions say greater pressure moves the pointer faster. On ThinkPads with the documented three-button arrangement, holding the center button while pressing the stick scrolls vertically or horizontally.
- Move the pointer: Press the TrackPoint cap in a direction parallel to the keyboard. Adjust how firmly you press to control pointer speed.
- Scroll: Hold the center button below the keyboard and press the TrackPoint in the direction you want to scroll.
- Open the Quick Menu: Lenovo’s current support overview documents TrackPoint use for opening its Quick Menu app. The available controls can depend on the computer’s configuration.
- Turn it off if you prefer: Lenovo’s instructions say TrackPoint can be disabled in settings. The exact settings path may vary by model and software configuration.
For model-specific instructions, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 10th Gen guide covers use and cap replacement. Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14/P14s Gen 4 and T16/P16s Gen 2 instructions provide details on pressure, buttons, scrolling, and replacement.

Is it actually better than a trackpad?
Buis’s essay calls the TrackPoint difficult to use and unattractive, and ends with the line “Trackpads won.” That is the author’s opinion in a piece published September 26, 2017—not a controlled usability comparison or a current measurement of what laptop users choose. The Lenovo documentation establishes that the feature remains supported, not that it is present on every current ThinkPad.
For an individual user, the practical trade-off is straightforward. A TrackPoint can be convenient if you want to keep your hands near the home row and your computer has a comfortable stick-and-button layout. A touchpad or external mouse may suit you better if you prefer those controls, or if the TrackPoint’s pressure response and button placement feel awkward. Your available alternatives also depend on the laptop’s configuration.

Buis’s essay attributes this explanation to Lenovo chief design officer David Hill, answering why some laptops still shipped with TrackPoint: “Some people get it and some people don’t; some people acquire the taste. It’s hard to explain, but I still think there’s a use for it.” It captures the feature’s niche better than a universal winner-and-loser claim: some people value it, while others do not.

Lenovo documents three styles—Classic Dome, Soft Dome, and Soft Rim—but compatibility depends on the computer model. Check the model and cap profile before ordering; a cap that looks right is not necessarily the right fit.
