Choose RaiDrive if you want to map a WebDAV server in Windows, prefer to start with a free tier, and its plan supports the service you need. Choose Mountain Duck if you need clearly documented selective offline files, cache-backed background synchronization, or a protocol such as SMB. Neither is a universal winner: the server’s WebDAV behavior, your offline needs, and the licensing terms matter as much as the client.
What both clients do in Windows
RaiDrive and Mountain Duck can connect storage and present it as a drive in File Explorer. That can make remote files accessible through familiar Windows workflows, but a mounted drive is not necessarily equivalent to a local disk in speed or offline availability. RaiDrive supports WebDAV and a broad catalog of cloud connections; Mountain Duck supports WebDAV and other server and cloud protocols. Check the exact service and the access rights available in the plan or configuration you intend to use.
| Decision | RaiDrive | Mountain Duck |
|---|---|---|
| Windows drive access | Mounts WebDAV and numerous cloud storage connections for use in File Explorer. RaiDrive product page | Mounts server and cloud storage in File Explorer. Windows Version 5 also offers Integrated Connect using the Cloud Files API. Mountain Duck product page |
| Offline access and synchronization | Describes opening, editing, and saving cloud files; features vary by plan. Its documentation does not establish synchronization semantics identical to Mountain Duck’s. | Smart Synchronization supports online-only items, locally cached items, and files selected to remain offline; cached changes upload in the background when connectivity returns. Smart Synchronization documentation |
| Protocols and services | Lists WebDAV, SFTP, FTP, and many cloud services. Write access for some services depends on plan or add-ons. RaiDrive product page | Supports WebDAV, FTP/TLS, SFTP, SMB, object storage, and major cloud services. Mountain Duck product page |
| Encryption-related capabilities | States that transmission uses TLS/SSL and that cache encryption is supported. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a comparison of overall security. | Supports Cryptomator vaults for client-side encryption and WebDAV locking where supported, with lock-owner files as another option. Which client fits your workflow?
Choose RaiDrive for a straightforward WebDAV drive or a free starting point
RaiDrive is a sensible first choice when your main task is connecting a WebDAV server in File Explorer, and its free Standard plan and supported services meet your needs. It may also suit users connecting one of the many listed cloud services. Do not assume that every service is writable on every plan: confirm the specific service, feature, and any add-on requirement before relying on it.
Choose Mountain Duck for selective offline files and background sync
Mountain Duck is the clearer fit when you want to decide which files stay available offline and have changed files cached locally before background upload resumes. Its documentation distinguishes online-only content, cached content, and content kept offline, and describes sync errors and conflicts. That behavior can help when connections are intermittent, but it does not mean remote changes appear instantly or that a local cache is a backup.

Consider Mountain Duck when you need another supported protocol
If your target storage is available through a protocol such as SMB, Mountain Duck’s listed protocol breadth may be useful. Verify that the exact backend and Windows connection mode you need are supported before purchasing; a general protocol list does not guarantee every server’s implementation will behave identically.
Set up WebDAV before choosing based on the client
A client cannot mount a WebDAV service that the server has not enabled or configured. RaiDrive’s WebDAV guide names Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR, and Nextcloud as examples and recommends HTTPS. For Nextcloud, the guide gives this URL pattern: https://<host>/remote.php/dav/files/<username>/. You will generally need the server hostname or IP address, port, and account credentials, unless the server permits anonymous access. A subfolder can be mounted as the drive root. - Enable WebDAV on the server. Check the NAS or service’s own settings and documentation; the client cannot enable it remotely.
- Collect the connection details. Record the correct URL, hostname or IP, port, path, and credentials as applicable.
- Configure the client and TLS. RaiDrive’s guide documents HTTPS as the default, a configurable TLS version and timeout, read-only mode, and an alternate server address for fallback. Ensure the server and client agree on TLS settings.
- Check network access. For a server reached from outside the local network, confirm firewall rules and port forwarding as well as the server address.
- Test the actual workflow. Try opening, saving, and listing the files you need, including the relevant folder sizes and offline behavior, before moving important work to the mount.
Server behavior can matter more than the client
WebDAV performance and compatibility depend on the server implementation. RaiDrive warns that NAS WebDAV is typically slower than SFTP and that behavior varies among servers; this is not a universal speed comparison across all clients or setups. If your NAS also supports SFTP and your use case permits it, consider whether that protocol is an option. RaiDrive’s guide also notes that preserving original modification dates during copying varies by server brand.
When a connection fails or feels slow, check the server and network before assuming the client is at fault. The RaiDrive guide identifies disabled WebDAV or an incorrect port, TLS mismatch, firewall or port-forwarding problems, slow directory listings, and server request-size limits as possible issues. Mountain Duck’s documentation discusses synchronization errors and conflicts, so inspect its sync status when local changes do not reach the server as expected.

Compare licensing and total cost
| Product | Documented licensing details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RaiDrive | The official pricing page lists Standard as free, with a limit of eight drives, advertisements, and forum support. Paid plans add features such as unlimited drives and email support. Displayed monthly rates are based on a three-year commitment; a subscription begins billing automatically after a 14-day trial unless canceled before billing. RaiDrive pricing | Check current prices, the plan’s service write permissions, add-ons, and trial terms. Plan features and prices can change. |
| Mountain Duck | The Version 5 purchase page describes per-seat licensing. One user may use that license on any number of computers. Each license covers one major version; future major-version upgrades may receive discounts depending on purchase date. For a single person using several Windows computers, Mountain Duck’s per-user multi-computer provision is relevant; for a team, compare the number of seats as well as features. For RaiDrive, compare the specific paid-plan or add-on requirements against the services and write operations you actually need.

- For basic WebDAV mapping with a free option: start by checking RaiDrive Standard’s current drive limit and whether your service and required write access are included.
- For files that must be available offline selectively: evaluate Mountain Duck’s Smart Synchronization settings and confirm that its cache and background-upload behavior suits your workflow.
- For a NAS connection: first confirm WebDAV is enabled, HTTPS and the port are correct, and the NAS’s own limits fit your needs. Compare SFTP only if both the server and your use case support it.
- For a protocol beyond WebDAV: check the exact service and protocol in the vendor documentation, then verify the required Windows mode and permissions.
This comparison is based on vendor documentation and product terms, not firsthand testing or an independent head-to-head performance benchmark. A vendor-authored comparison should not be treated as an independent current benchmark, especially where it references older product versions. Mountain Duck comparison page
