The warning is a prompt to inspect the actual characters—not proof that the file is malicious. Open the file in an editor that reveals hidden Unicode, such as Visual Studio Code, and check whether the characters are necessary or conceal text that tools may interpret differently.
What does hidden Unicode text mean on GitHub?
Unicode includes characters that may not be readily visible in a file’s ordinary display. Some can affect how text is presented or interpreted, so the view in a web interface may not tell the whole story. GitHub says hidden Unicode text can hide content in a file or make code appear one way while a tool—or an AI system—interprets it another way.
GitHub announced the broader warning on May 1, 2025. Its announcement describes it as a notice shown on github.com when a file contains hidden Unicode text.
What should I do when GitHub warns about hidden Unicode text?
- Open the flagged file in an editor that exposes hidden characters. GitHub gives Visual Studio Code as an example and says it highlights the characters by default.
- Review the characters in context. Determine whether they are expected and needed; do not infer malicious intent from the warning alone.
- Check for a difference between appearance and interpretation. Ask whether the characters disguise text that a tool may interpret or compile differently from what the file appears to show.
- Make a review decision based on what you find. If the characters are intentional and do not create a misleading or malformed representation, document or otherwise account for that use as appropriate for your project.
How is the 2025 warning different from GitHub’s earlier Unicode warning?
GitHub’s October 31, 2021 warning focused specifically on bidirectional Unicode characters. Such characters can reorder segments of text visually; GitHub associated that warning with CVE-2021-42574. The 2025 announcement describes a broader warning for hidden Unicode text and emphasizes that displayed text may differ from how tools interpret a file.

| Announcement | Scope and concern | Review guidance |
|---|---|---|
| October 31, 2021 | Bidirectional Unicode characters that can swap the apparent order of text segments; GitHub cited CVE-2021-42574. | GitHub said intentional, non-malformed bidirectional Unicode use can be ignored after review. GitHub’s 2021 announcement |
| May 1, 2025 | Hidden Unicode text more broadly, which may be difficult to see and interpreted differently by an interface, tool, or AI. | Inspect the file in an editor that displays hidden characters and verify that they are necessary and do not disguise differently interpreted or compiled text. GitHub’s 2025 announcement |
GitHub also described a warning on the commit details page for files in a commit containing hidden Unicode characters in its May 15, 2025 commit-details update. That notice similarly explains that characters may not be visible to people but can affect how tools interpret a file.
