Connect Stripe subscriptions to Avalara AvaTax through Avalara’s official app in the Stripe App Marketplace. Before relying on it for live invoices, confirm your subscription and plan coverage, configure the connector, map your products to Avalara tax codes, and verify how calculation and testing work in your specific account.
What the Avalara–Stripe connection supports
Avalara’s integration page describes its Stripe connector for Stripe Billing and Checkout, while the Stripe Marketplace listing also lists Invoicing, Quotes, and Payment Links. Stripe Billing subscription invoices are therefore within the stated scope, but confirm that the connector supports your precise workflow and account configuration before switching it on.
The Marketplace identifies the app as built by Avalara, requires a paid subscription, and recommends installing after purchasing. Avalara describes broader services—including sales-tax obligation assessment, exemption-certificate workflows, returns filing and remittance, and some international tax and e-invoicing capabilities—but availability can depend on the plan. Do not assume every service is included with the Stripe connector.

Map products and services to tax codes
Avalara identifies product and service mapping to Avalara tax codes as a connector setup task. Review the Stripe catalog and assign the appropriate codes to the items you sell. Tax treatment can depend on the product, service, and jurisdiction, so do not choose codes solely because a product name seems similar.

Check customer addresses
Avalara says its address-validation capability uses geolocation within Stripe to determine tax rates rather than relying on less precise ZIP-code rates. Review the address data collected in your checkout and billing flows, and confirm that the connector’s address handling fits your setup; this is not a guarantee of a particular accuracy result.
Configure the official connector
- Confirm eligibility and purchase. Check the current Stripe Marketplace listing and Avalara plan details for availability, pricing, and coverage. The listing says to install after purchasing a subscription.
- Install and configure the app. Follow Avalara’s current setup instructions and configure the connector settings for your Stripe account. Avalara describes guided setup support, but the public integration page does not establish a reliable click-by-click path or current dashboard labels. Use Avalara’s developer documentation index and current account-specific instructions rather than relying on assumed menu names.
- Map the catalog and review address handling. Apply the tax-code mappings for your products and services, then check how customer location data is collected and validated in your workflow.
- Verify subscription invoice behavior and testing before going live. Establish which calculation mode the account uses and which test environment is currently supported. Do not assume that a test in one Stripe workflow proves the behavior of every subscription invoice path.
Understand subscription tax timing before launch
The timing and mechanics of calculation depend on the connector flow. Avalara’s release-note result for version 26.19.0, dated October 29, 2025, reports synchronous automatic tax calculation and support for subscription invoices without changing Stripe’s pay_immediately flag. This is a release-note statement, not a universal guarantee for every account or configuration; verify the current behavior with Avalara.

A separate Stripe Support description concerns an older or distinct Avalara Connector for Stripe Invoicing flow associated with Stripe Connector for NetSuite. In that flow, tax is added as a standalone “Sales Tax” invoice item while the Stripe invoice remains a draft, with a pay_immediately setting and an explicit limited-support warning. It should not be treated as the standard procedure for the direct Avalara app.
Check sandbox availability instead of assuming
The Marketplace listing says sandbox testing is unavailable, while Avalara’s October 29, 2025 release-note result says Stripe sandbox support was added. Because those official sources conflict, confirm the current app-specific status with Avalara or in your account before planning tests. Do not interpret either statement as proof of what your current installation supports.

Confirm tax obligations separately
Avalara describes tools that can help assess sales-tax obligations and support filing and remittance. Connecting a tax engine does not itself determine where your business must register, collect, or file. Those decisions depend on your business and sales; consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your circumstances.

Avalara’s product page lists a starting price of $699 per state per year and a 12-month agreement, with annual or monthly payment options. These are changeable vendor terms, not a quote for every customer. Confirm the current price, agreement, calculation volume, and included services directly with Avalara before purchase.
