What changes in File Explorer dark mode?
Microsoft’s October 6, 2025 Dev Channel announcement for build 26220.6772, based on Windows 11 version 25H2, says: “You’ll now see a consistent dark mode experience in:” The listed areas cover everyday file operations as well as related prompts and status views.
- Copy, move, and delete dialogs, in both their default and expanded states.
- Progress bars and chart views shown during file operations.
- Prompts to skip, override, or select files.
- Other confirmation and error dialogs in File Explorer.
The point is to extend dark styling across more of File Explorer’s interface, rather than leave some of these actions in a contrasting light appearance. Microsoft’s announcements do not quantify any effect on readability, accessibility, or productivity.
Which Windows 11 builds include the changes?
Microsoft announced the work in stages. These builds are associated with different channels and Windows 11 versions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or as evidence of a simultaneous general release.

The Release Preview announcement is a later rollout milestone, not confirmation that the feature is installed on all Windows 11 devices. For the precise list of changes in a given build, consult the announcement for that channel and build.
How to check whether your PC is on a listed build
- Open Settings and go to System > About. Check the Windows version and OS build listed under Windows specifications.
- To see whether the PC is enrolled in an Insider channel, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Compare the version, build, and channel shown on your PC with the entries above. A matching build announcement indicates the relevant test or preview context; it does not establish that an unrelated build or channel has the same changes.
Known issue in the Beta announcement
Microsoft noted a copy-dialog problem in the Beta Channel announcement for build 26120.6972: when text scaling is used, the scrollbar and footer could be missing, and a white block could appear. This is a documented issue for that announced Beta build, not a statement that every build has the same problem.

Is this a separate app or a hardware upgrade?
No. The announcements describe changes to Windows’ built-in File Explorer interface; they do not identify a separate application, required purchase, or hardware upgrade. They also do not provide a quantified user-impact result.
