Dueling Zero is a DIY, Voron Zero-derived 3D printer design that gives two toolheads independent XY gantries over one build platform. It offers another way to approach multi-material and duplicate-part printing: rather than switching filament through one head, moving two heads on a shared axis, or exchanging whole toolheads, the design adds a separate motion system for the second head. That is an architectural tradeoff—not evidence that it outperforms toolchangers or IDEX printers.
What a second gantry changes
In a conventional single-toolhead printer, one head handles the job. Multi-material designs add ways to bring another filament or tool into play. Dueling Zero, or D0, takes a more mechanically distinct approach: two toolheads each have an independent gantry and XY motion system, operating above the same workspace. Zruncho 3D describes it as a dual-gantry modification of the Voron Zero; builders can adapt a Voron Zero or build a machine from scratch. The project README documents the design and build materials.
The point of independent motion is that the inactive head does not have to be carried along a shared axis with the active head. It also avoids a mechanism that physically swaps toolheads. Those are design motivations, not measured proof of lower moving mass, faster printing, better quality, or less waste than competing systems.
How it compares with other multi-tool approaches
Each architecture handles the extra material or tool differently. Hackaday’s February 13, 2024 overview describes filament swapping, IDEX, toolchanging, and Dueling Zero’s independent second gantry; its comparisons are useful for understanding the layouts, but the consulted sources provide no common performance benchmark. These descriptions do not establish a winner. The available sources do not provide controlled, comparable measurements for print quality, speed, acceleration, material waste, or total build cost. The right choice depends on the jobs you need to run and which mechanical and firmware compromises you prefer.
What Dueling Zero is intended to print
The project identifies two-color and two-material printing as uses for its paired heads. Two independent heads can also make dual-part printing possible. Mirror and copy modes—printing mirrored or repeated parts—depend on firmware support, so they should not be assumed to work in every build or configuration. Check the project documentation and the firmware you plan to use before designing a workflow around those modes.

Hackaday characterizes the design as having two printheads “like an IDEX” while acting “much more like a single-extruder 3D printer in terms of print quality and motion control.” That is Donald Papp’s description in the article, not an independently published test result.
What building one involves
Dueling Zero is a documented DIY project, not an established off-the-shelf printer in the cited materials. The repository brings together parts information, instructions, software, and FAQ material. Its September 16, 2023 v3 gantry release describes a symmetric, nested belt path derived from Pandora’s Box. Zruncho 3D reports that this revision reduced unique parts, increased travel, and broadened toolhead compatibility; these are the project’s own design notes.

The design shares some components with the Voron Zero, but the FAQ says the gantry and printed parts differ substantially. Expect to work from the D0-specific documentation rather than treating an ordinary V0 parts list as a complete build plan. The FAQ’s deliberately humorous response about time and cost underscores that this is a substantial build; the cited project pages do not give a standardized total cost or build-time figure. Consult the Dueling Zero FAQ alongside the README.
Use example builds as examples, not a shopping list
The README includes multiple sample builds with different component choices. One lists two MGN7H 300 mm linear rails; another lists two MGN7H 250 mm rails and a different component set. That variation means a rail length from one example is not a universal D0 specification. Before buying parts such as MGN7H 300 mm rails, confirm the selected revision, build configuration, and corresponding parts list in the repository.

The project also points to related designs and components, including Tri-Zero, BoxZero, ZeroPanels, Boop, and Voron V0.2 toolhead options. These connections may help builders navigate the ecosystem, but they do not imply that every listed part or design is required for every Dueling Zero build.

A second gantry is worth considering if you specifically want two independently moving heads and are comfortable taking on a more involved mechanical and firmware project. It is less compelling if your main goal is a ready-made multi-material workflow or you want a proven, directly comparable performance advantage: the cited materials do not establish one.

- Consider it if independent head motion, two-material or two-color work, or firmware-supported duplicate and mirror modes fit your projects.
- Compare alternatives if you would rather swap filament through one head, keep two heads on a shared axis, or exchange complete tools.
- Plan around documentation if building from a V0 base: the D0 gantry and printed parts have meaningful differences, and sample configurations vary.
- Verify before sourcing if a component dimension comes from a particular sample build; do not assume it applies to your chosen revision.
Zruncho, the project author, closes the README with the hope that Dueling Zero inspires builders “to build something new, whether a D0 or your own design.” That captures the project’s strongest fit: an open-ended DIY architecture for builders interested in exploring a different way to arrange multi-tool motion.
