Optiboot is a compact bootloader for supported Arduino-compatible AVR boards. It is designed to use less flash and streamline sketch uploads, but the project does not publish an independently measured speedup. Whether it works—and how much space or time you gain—depends on your board, its core and upload settings.
What Optiboot changes
A bootloader is firmware that runs when a microcontroller resets and lets a computer program it, typically over a serial connection. Optiboot replaces or provides that bootloader on supported AVR targets; it does not make the sketch itself execute faster or add a visible hardware feature.
The Optiboot project describes a 512-byte implementation and says it frees 1.5K of code space compared with older bootloaders. Those are project-stated figures, not a guarantee of the usable sketch capacity on every board. The actual space available depends on the microcontroller and the board/core build. Arduino’s AVR implementation also documents a 512-byte fit (Optiboot project README; ArduinoCore-avr Optiboot source).
Does Optiboot make uploads faster?
Optiboot is designed to program sketches faster, using higher baud rates and streamlined programming, according to the project. The cited project and Arduino source do not provide a controlled, independently measured comparison, so there is no supported percentage or number of seconds to promise. Actual upload time depends on the board configuration, serial connection, host settings, and sketch.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practical terms, the speed claim is a design benefit, not a benchmark result. A compatible core’s prescribed upload settings matter: using a baud rate or host-tool configuration that does not match the bootloader can prevent a successful upload.
Which boards can use Optiboot?
“Arduino” by itself does not establish compatibility. The project README names ATmega8, ATmega168, and ATmega328P families and derivatives, but the exact board definition, microcontroller, clock, baud rate, and core configuration must match. The project recommends that most users install a supported Arduino core rather than install the source repository directly; its documentation points to community cores for broader AVR coverage (Optiboot project README).

- Identify the microcontroller on your board.
- Check that the core you intend to use supports that exact target and provides an Optiboot board definition.
- Use the core’s documented clock, upload speed, and host-tool settings.
- Do not replace an already suitable Optiboot variant without a specific reason; the project cautions against doing so.
How to install or restore Optiboot
The project’s documented burn procedure uses an ISP programmer. This is for installing or restoring a bootloader; it is not required just to upload sketches to a board already configured with Optiboot. Follow the target core’s instructions, since board menus and settings can vary.
- Install a core that supports your exact AVR board and Optiboot target.
- In the Arduino IDE, select the appropriate Optiboot board type under Tools > Board. Select any target-specific processor or clock option the core requires.
- Connect the board to an ISP programmer, following the programmer and board documentation for wiring and voltage.
- Choose Tools > Burn Bootloader. Wait for the IDE to report completion; if it reports an error, check the selected target, wiring, and programmer configuration before retrying.
- After a successful burn, select the Optiboot board type and upload sketches normally through the board’s supported upload connection.
The procedure establishes the need for an ISP programmer, not that any particular programmer model will work with every board. A USBasp AVR ISP programmer is one possible category of tool; check connector, voltage, and target compatibility before choosing one. Installation details are in the Optiboot “How Optiboot Works” documentation.

Limitations and troubleshooting considerations
Optiboot saves space partly by implementing a reduced subset of STK500 protocol behavior. The project’s source identifies EEPROM programming and non-page-aligned writes as omitted features. It also warns that higher baud rates can be incompatible with standard Arduino flash settings. Use the upload settings and host tools supplied for your target core rather than assuming generic settings will apply (Optiboot source; How Optiboot Works).
- Upload fails after burning: verify that the selected board, processor, clock, and upload speed match the installed bootloader.
- Host-tool errors or unexpected responses: the documentation notes that ignored protocol commands can produce incorrect responses; use a supported host-tool configuration. It specifically notes known operation with avrdude versions that support the
-c arduinoprogrammer type. - Board support is uncertain: check the current documentation for the exact core and target. The project notes that supported-chip configurations vary in attention and may contain bugs.
How to compare bootloader options
If your target core offers more than one bootloader, compare the options using the settings and documentation for that specific board rather than treating all AVR boards as interchangeable.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Supported microcontroller and board definition | The bootloader must match the target and the core’s configuration. |
| Flash footprint and sketch capacity | A smaller bootloader can leave more flash for a sketch, but the realized capacity depends on the chip and build. |
| Upload baud rate and host-tool compatibility | The serial settings and programming tool must work with the bootloader’s configuration. |
| Protocol features | Reduced protocol implementations may omit operations such as EEPROM programming or non-page-aligned writes. |
| Installation and recovery route | Burning a bootloader requires an ISP programmer under the documented procedure; ordinary uploads to an already configured board do not. |
