Alpakka is Input Labs’ open, gyro-focused game-controller reference design—not simply a finished controller to order and use. It is aimed at builders who want motion-based aiming, extensive customization, or a DIY alternative to thumbstick aiming. The practical catch is that parts and core modules depend on the version, and assembly and sourcing are part of the project.

What is the Alpakka controller?

Input Labs describes Alpakka as its main reference design and a reinterpretation of the classic gamepad. Its distinguishing feature is gyro-focused aiming, paired with a touch-sensitive surface around the ABXY buttons. Input Labs says its design uses two gyro sensors in parallel. The official overview also describes firmware that can present the controller to a computer as a keyboard, mouse, and XInput gamepad, allowing it to work with different games and launchers.

Input Labs presents the controller for people who want mouse-focused games from a sofa, struggle with keyboard or thumbstick controls, prefer motion aiming, or want to modify a controller for particular needs. Those are the maker’s suggested uses, not clinical accessibility findings or evidence that the device suits every player.

How gyro aiming and configuration work

Rather than relying only on a thumbstick to move the aim, Alpakka uses motion input: moving the controller can move the on-screen pointer or aim. Input Labs promotes genre-specific profiles and an optional configuration app. Its claims of low latency, no acceleration or smoothing, and mouse-like performance are manufacturer descriptions; the available sources do not establish independent comparative testing.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The overview lists a 250 Hz polling rate for the reference design and says modified builds can reach up to 1000 Hz. These are Input Labs’ figures, not independent measurements. Polling rate alone does not establish how responsive a complete setup will feel, since the game, connection, configuration, and hardware all matter.

Alpakka versions and the parts that differ

Check the version before buying components. The firmware repository lists distinct targets for Alpakka v0.x.x and v1.x.x, with different core modules. A Raspberry Pi Pico is relevant to the older v0 build; it should not be treated as the universal board for Alpakka.

The v1 announcement specified a 1200 mAh LiPo battery for its reference design. That figure describes the announced design, not a promise that every Alpakka build includes a battery. The announcement’s projected shipping date is historical, so use current documentation and availability information rather than treating it as a live schedule.

What you need to build one

The Input Labs components guide describes a build assembled from a PCB, electronics such as thumbsticks and buttons, case and button pieces, and bolts and nuts. Battery and wireless parts are optional depending on the build. The guide includes a configurator for a complete kit and links to parts from Input Labs and other suppliers. It also lists a USB-to-TTL serial cable as a developer tool; that does not make the cable a universal requirement for ordinary assembly.

  1. Choose a version. Match the build manual and firmware target to the v0, v1, or other version you intend to assemble.
  2. Use the matching parts list. Confirm the core module, PCB, controls, case pieces, fasteners, and any optional wireless or battery components against the current manual.
  3. Decide how to source parts. Use the configurator for a guided kit or source components separately, checking that each item matches the version.
  4. Follow the current build instructions. Component requirements and assembly steps can differ by version; do not infer them from an older announcement or a parts list alone.

Can you buy a complete Alpakka controller?

The Input Labs manual FAQ directs people interested in buying toward components and DIY kits rather than listing a direct complete-controller purchase on that FAQ page. Input Labs has also described two later product directions: a DIY version for people with a 3D printer and a PRO version intended to arrive pre-assembled with an injection-molded case. These descriptions do not establish current stock or launch status. Check the future developments update, the Alpakka 2 page, and the project’s current shop or parts pages for what is available now.

What does an Alpakka build cost?

Input Labs’ manual FAQ estimates a complete DIY kit sourced from the company at €150–€200. For builders sourcing parts elsewhere, it estimates about €100 per controller when the necessary tools are already owned; that estimate excludes component shipping. These are the FAQ’s estimates, not verified live prices, and actual totals depend on version, supplier, shipping, and which tools or optional parts are needed.

Wireless, latency, and compatibility claims

Input Labs’ FAQ says wireless latency with the reference dongle is around 2 milliseconds. That is the maker’s stated figure for that connection, not an independently verified benchmark. The overview describes firmware emulation of keyboard, mouse, and XInput gamepad input as its compatibility route. Input Labs’ Alpakka 2 page lists Windows 10/11, Steam Deck (Arch), and other Linux distributions for that product direction; check the page for current, version-specific compatibility information.

Who should consider Alpakka?

  • Consider it if gyro aiming, motion-based controls, or a customizable DIY controller are central to what you want.
  • Plan for a build project if you are comfortable checking version-specific parts, assembling hardware, and troubleshooting sourcing differences.
  • Wait or verify availability if you want a pre-assembled controller: Input Labs has described a PRO direction, but the cited product materials do not establish current availability.
  • Set realistic expectations for speed and accessibility: Input Labs’ performance descriptions and suggested accessibility use cases are not independent test results or clinical evaluations.

For the project’s overview and firmware targets, start with the Alpakka overview and firmware repository. Use the manual FAQ for the maker’s cost and wireless-latency estimates, and the v1 announcement for details of the announced reference design.
