First check what is using the space, then choose a cleanup option that matches the files you can safely remove or move. Windows and macOS both include storage tools to help you find large files and clear unnecessary items; avoid deleting system files just because a storage category looks large.
Check what is using storage
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open File Explorer and select This PC to see available space on each drive.
- For a breakdown and cleanup options, open Settings > System > Storage. Review the categories before deleting anything. Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance describes these views and tools.
Mac
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS versions, use Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. The storage view categorizes usage and updates as you make changes. Apple’s Mac storage guidance explains the available controls.
On some Macs, a category named System Data or Other groups files that do not fit a more specific category. The label does not identify a particular file to remove, and Apple’s guidance does not recommend deleting arbitrary files from it.
Use built-in cleanup tools
Windows: review recommendations and temporary files
In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations when available. Review the listed temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps; check the indicated space savings and select only items you understand and no longer need.

Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. It works on the system drive, usually C:. By default, it does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure those options. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from its online-only management. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions before changing its settings.
If Storage Sense is not available, Windows also includes Disk Cleanup for temporary and system files. Check the descriptions and selected file types before confirming. Be especially careful with the previous Windows installation: deleting its Windows.old files removes the option to return to the previous Windows version, and that choice cannot be undone. Microsoft’s drive-space instructions describe this consequence.

Mac: inspect categories before removing items
In the Storage view, use the More Info controls beside categories such as Applications, Documents, Messages, Music Creation, Podcasts, Trash, and TV where available. Remove only content you recognize and do not need; available controls vary by macOS version. Apple documents the category view and options in its storage guidance.
Delete unwanted files or move files you want to keep
Look through Downloads, videos, photos, music, and other media for items you no longer need. On Windows, sort a folder by size to locate large files. Delete unwanted items, then empty the Recycle Bin to finish freeing their space. On a Mac, consider removing downloads or media you can stream or download again.

If you want to keep large files but do not need them on the computer all the time, move them to an external drive, USB drive, or SD card. Apple also notes that large libraries such as Photos or iMovie can be moved to another connected storage device when appropriate. Files stored on an external device are available only when that device is accessible; do not disconnect it when you need those files. A portable external SSD or hard drive is one option, but the cited guidance does not test or endorse any particular product.

On Windows, OneDrive Files On-Demand can leave smaller placeholders on the PC while the full files remain in OneDrive. When configured, Storage Sense can make eligible inactive cloud files online-only. An online-only file needs an internet connection to open; keep a file marked Always keep on this device if you need its local copy. Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance explains the behavior.

Mac storage optimization can also use iCloud and built-in tools. Cloud options depend on your account, settings, and connectivity; they are not a guarantee of unlimited storage or offline access to a full local copy. See Apple’s Mac storage guidance for its options.

Choose the route that fits the files
