The receiver needs an oscillator signal at four times the frequency you want to receive. ProgRock2’s programmable outputs appear suited to that role when the required frequency and electrical connection are appropriate; verify both against the current manuals before wiring.
How the ProgRock2 fits into the receiver
The QRP Labs receiver is an SDR module built around a quadrature sampling detector, also called a Tayloe detector. It needs an external local oscillator (LO) running at four times the receive frequency. QRP Labs’ receiver documentation names the original ProgRock as one possible LO source, and its construction instructions show it set to 4× the desired reception frequency. The documentation does not name ProgRock2 as an exact receiver pairing, so using the newer module this way is a reasoned adaptation rather than a manufacturer-validated build.
ProgRock2 is a programmable crystal replacement, not a continuously tuning VFO. QRP Labs specifies three independent 3.3 V peak-to-peak square-wave outputs, eight selectable frequency banks, USB configuration, and a main output range of 3.5 kHz to 200 MHz. The product page also describes an extended range that exceeds the Si5351A datasheet specifications; do not treat that as equivalent to the principal specified range. With GPS frequency discipline enabled, two outputs are available instead of three. See the ProgRock2 product documentation and the receiver documentation for current module details.
Choose a receive frequency and check the LO range
First choose the intended receive frequency, then multiply it by four to get the LO setting. For example, a target of 7.1 MHz requires an LO of 28.4 MHz. This is an arithmetic example, not a tested ProgRock2-and-receiver configuration. Before building, confirm that your calculated frequency is within ProgRock2’s principal 3.5 kHz–200 MHz range and that the receiver accepts the selected output’s signal and connection. The product specifications alone do not establish the exact wiring or configuration for this pairing.

ProgRock2’s frequency banks can store selectable programmed frequencies, but that does not make the module a continuously tuning receiver control. If you need to tune across a band during operation, the available product documentation does not establish that ProgRock2 provides that VFO function. Consult the current ProgRock2 manual for configuring its outputs and the receiver manual for its LO interface.
Select the receiver band-pass filter
The receiver kit includes a band-pass filter (BPF) for one selected amateur band from 160m through 10m. Choose the filter to match the band you plan to receive; the LO frequency does not replace the need for the correct RF filter. QRP Labs’ receiver kit listing describes the included band choice.

Follow the current construction instructions and check the filter’s marked input and output orientation. QRP Labs notes that an earlier receiver-instruction diagram showed the filter backwards and was corrected. Use the diagram for your board revision rather than relying on an older image.
Plan the audio connection
The receiver provides isolated I-Q audio intended for a stereo sound-card input. If your computer has only a mono input, QRP Labs offers an optional polyphase network intended to cancel the unwanted sideband and provide single-sideband output. The stereo I-Q and mono/polyphase options serve different input arrangements; choose based on the audio hardware you will connect. See the receiver documentation and polyphase network information.

Build and wiring checks
- Pick the band and filter: Select the receiver kit’s BPF for the amateur band you intend to receive, from the available choices between 160m and 10m.
- Calculate the LO: Multiply your target receive frequency by four, as required by the receiver documentation.
- Check the oscillator setting: Confirm the calculated frequency falls within ProgRock2’s stated main range and configure the output using the current ProgRock2 manual. Verify the output’s electrical interface against the receiver input before connecting it.
- Assemble and orient the filter: Follow the construction manual for your board revision, including the corrected filter orientation.
- Choose an audio path: Connect I-Q audio to a stereo sound-card input, or use the optional polyphase network for a mono-input arrangement.
- Set receive-only control if applicable: The receiver construction example grounds the TX control input for receive-only use. Confirm the wiring against the current receiver manual and your actual board revision.
- Use GPS discipline only with the right procedure: If you want GPS 1pps frequency discipline, follow the applicable ProgRock2 manual’s input requirements and setup procedure. The legacy ProgRock manual is not a substitute for ProgRock2 instructions.
What is and is not established
QRP Labs documents the receiver’s 4× LO requirement and illustrates the original ProgRock as one possible source. It separately documents ProgRock2’s programmable square-wave outputs and frequency range. Those facts support considering ProgRock2 for the oscillator role, but do not establish exact ProgRock2 wiring, software settings, measured performance, or a completed receiver build. Follow current manufacturer documentation for both boards and treat any interface details not specified there as unresolved until confirmed.
