Start by identifying your device and Minecraft edition, then pinpoint where things fail: installing the Launcher, updating the game, signing in or validating ownership, pressing Play, or loading a world. The right fix depends on that stage: Windows Launcher repairs do not apply to every Bedrock, console, or mobile update problem.
First, identify the device, edition, and failure point
Use the table to choose the troubleshooting path that fits. Java and Bedrock have different update and launch paths, and console or mobile updates are handled through the device’s platform.

If the Minecraft Launcher will not install
The installer’s download source does not necessarily determine which account the installation process uses. Minecraft Help says a Microsoft Store login is required even when you download the Launcher installer from Minecraft.net.
- Open Microsoft Store and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use for Minecraft.
- Try installing through the Xbox app or download the Launcher from Minecraft.net if needed. The Minecraft.net installer still requires the Microsoft Store login.
- If installation still fails, follow Minecraft Help’s Launcher installation troubleshooting. On Windows, resetting the Store cache is another option described below.
If Play is missing or you see a license error
Before buying the game again, check whether the Launcher is signed into the account that owns the license. An account mismatch across Microsoft apps can make a valid purchase appear unavailable.

- Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app.
- Sign in to each with the same Microsoft account—the one used to buy Minecraft or access the relevant subscription.
- Check the Microsoft account order history or your purchase confirmation to verify ownership. If the account is not clear, use Minecraft Help’s Launcher troubleshooting guide before considering another purchase.
If Java Edition crashes after you press Play
A fresh installation profile is a useful test because it separates a problem with the selected profile’s settings or mods from a broader launch failure.
- In the Launcher, open the Java Edition installations list and create a new installation.
- Select the same game version as the installation that crashes, then launch the new profile.
- If the new profile starts, inspect the original profile’s mods and advanced settings, including resolution and JVM arguments. Reintroduce changes cautiously to identify what triggers the crash.
Minecraft Help describes this as a troubleshooting approach, not a guaranteed fix. If the new profile also crashes, this test has not isolated the cause. See Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues.

If the Windows Launcher crashes, freezes, or will not open
Choose a repair option that matches the symptom rather than uninstalling immediately. Before uninstalling, back up your worlds: removing software can put local data at risk.
- Try Windows app repair: use Windows’ installed-app settings to find Minecraft Launcher and choose the available repair option. Exact labels can vary by Windows version.
- Reset Microsoft Store cache: use this when Store-related installation or update behavior is involved. Minecraft Help includes this among its Launcher troubleshooting options.
- Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool: consider it for Windows Launcher problems involving Gaming Services. Follow the current Microsoft-provided tool instructions.
- Reinstall the Launcher: reserve this for cases where the less disruptive options do not help. Back up worlds first and make sure you know which Microsoft account owns the game.

If Bedrock or a console or mobile game will not update
For Bedrock outside the Windows Launcher, use the update instructions for the platform where the game is installed—such as its console store or mobile app store. Minecraft’s update information page directs players to platform-specific instructions. A Windows Store cache reset or Launcher reinstall is not a universal fix for console and mobile updates.
If the update problem is actually a multiplayer version mismatch, check that the game is on the latest release. Preview and Snapshot builds are not the same as the standard current release and may not match other players’ versions.

Check that your operating system is supported
Minecraft Help states: “As of March 2025, you must update to at least Windows 10 or MacOS 10.15 to access online play and continue receiving updates for Minecraft through the Launcher.” If your computer runs an older operating system, check this requirement before spending time on Launcher repairs. The statement concerns online play and updates through the Launcher; it does not establish support details for every platform or every offline use.
