You get it through an online store, but what that means for long-term access depends on the seller’s terms, account and DRM requirements, download policy, and whether the game relies on online servers. Digital delivery does not automatically mean you need a constant internet connection—and a physical disc is not automatically a complete, offline copy.
What changes when a game is digital-only?
The main difference is how you obtain and use that edition. You buy or claim it through a digital storefront, then download it to a supported device. That can make purchase and installation convenient, but it removes the retail disc or cartridge as an alternative way to acquire the game. It can also affect what you can lend, resell, transfer, or keep accessible if an account or service changes.
“Digital” describes delivery; it does not by itself tell you whether a game works offline, can be redownloaded indefinitely, or requires an account after installation. Those details vary by platform, title, and the terms in effect when you buy. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to check how long access is expected to last and the seller’s terms: a digital purchase may grant a license to access content rather than full control, and access may depend on an active account or a platform continuing to operate. Do you really own a digital game?
In everyday speech, people say they “own” a game they paid for. In practical terms, however, a digital storefront purchase may be a license to access the game under specified conditions, rather than ownership of an unrestricted copy. DRM can limit how or where the game is used, and account or platform policies can affect access. The FTC’s guidance is about digital items generally, not a ruling on the terms of every game purchase; check the specific store’s terms and the title’s requirements rather than assuming every purchase works the same way.

What happens if a game is delisted?
A delisting means the store stops offering the game for new purchases. It does not, by itself, answer whether someone who already bought it can continue playing or redownload it. Those questions depend on the platform’s account and download policies, the game’s DRM, and any online services it needs. Neither the FTC’s general guidance nor the European Commission’s discussion establishes one universal redownload rule for all platforms.
- Already installed: Whether it launches may depend on its DRM, account checks, and any required game servers.
- Not installed or deleted: Whether you can download it again depends on the platform’s policy and continued access to the account or service.
- Requires an online service: Losing that service can affect play even if the game remains installed.
Before buying a digital-only game you especially want to keep, look up the platform’s current policy on account access and redownloads, and check the game’s own offline and server requirements. Do not treat “delisted” as synonymous with “unplayable,” or assume a past purchase guarantees future downloads.

Can you still play after the game’s servers shut down?
Sometimes; it depends on what those servers do. A game that uses servers only for online multiplayer may lose that mode while other features remain available. A game that requires a publisher’s server for authentication or core play can become partly or entirely unplayable if support ends. The European Commission has noted that games can depend on publishers’ servers and that ending support can make such games partly or wholly unplayable; this risk applies to server-dependent games, not to all digital releases. Check the game’s official requirements and support information for single-player offline play, account or authentication checks, and service dependencies. “Single-player” does not necessarily mean “offline,” and a digital download does not necessarily mean “always online.”

How does a physical edition compare?
A disc or cartridge gives you a tangible edition and may offer a used-copy route, but it is not automatically a complete or permanent offline version. The data on the physical copy may be only part of what is needed; a game can still require a download, an account, a patch, or a server. Check the specific edition and platform before relying on it as a fallback.

Neither format guarantees lasting access. A digital copy can be convenient and playable offline after installation; a physical copy can offer a tangible copy and used-market options. The actual trade-off turns on the particular release’s content, account rules, downloads, and service dependencies.

What does Sony’s announced 2028 change mean?
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on July 1, 2026 that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony says new games after that date will be available through PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only. The announcement does not affect PlayStation games released, or to be released, before January 2028 in disc format. What can players do to reduce access surprises?
- Check the edition: Confirm whether a retail disc or cartridge exists for your region and platform, and whether it includes the game itself or requires a substantial download.
- Check offline play: Look for explicit information on whether the game launches and supports its main modes without an internet connection.
- Check account and DRM terms: Find out whether the game must stay linked to an account, whether there are device or activation limits, and what the storefront says about redownloads.
- Check server dependencies: Look for notices about authentication, multiplayer, or other required services, and whether local play remains if those services end.
- Keep access details current: Preserve access to the account used to buy the game and follow the platform’s official notices about downloads and service changes.
What happens to games when publishers stop supporting them?
Keeping a consumer copy is not the same as preserving a game so it can be studied or made accessible in the future. The Library of Congress identifies materials such as source code, finished builds, distribution files, software and platform dependencies, documentation, metadata, and access-control details as relevant to software and video-game preservation. If an original copy is unavailable or important online dependencies cannot be recreated, a video recording may serve as a substitute for a preservation copy. That distinction matters: an installed game may stop working if it depends on unavailable services or software, while preserving its files alone may not reproduce the original experience. Long-term preservation can require technical materials and documentation that an ordinary purchase does not provide.
Are there legal exceptions for preserving or restoring games?
In the United States, 37 CFR § 201.40(b)(19) provides limited exemptions for specified cases involving lawfully acquired complete games whose authentication-server support has ceased. One provision allows circumvention to restore a game for personal local play. Other provisions cover eligible libraries, archives, and museums preserving games under stated conditions, including restrictions on access and use; the rule also addresses certain complete games no longer reasonably available for eligible institutional preservation. 37 CFR § 201.40.
This is not a general permission to bypass DRM, make public copies, or distribute a game. The exemption has specific eligibility, purpose, and access conditions. For legal advice or a situation outside those conditions, consult a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction.
Is there a rule requiring games to stay playable?
There is no worldwide rule established by the cited sources that guarantees perpetual playability after a game is no longer commercially provided. In a June 16, 2026 statement, the European Commission said it could not at that stage propose a legal obligation to keep games playable after commercial provision ended, citing intellectual-property issues. It also described EU consumer protections that can require information about the duration of digital content and termination conditions, and may provide remedies—including proportionate refunds—when content does not conform to the contract. The Commission said EU law did not specify how long such content must be supplied or require games to remain playable after commercial provision ended.
The Commission planned to engage consumers and publishers by the end of 2026 to explore improved standards. This is a dated EU position, not a global legal answer; later policy developments could change the picture. European Commission statement.
