Start by logging the sensor’s raw output with no contact, then during a repeatable press or load, and again as it unloads. That pattern helps distinguish noise, drift, hysteresis, saturation, or uneven taxel response before you change filters or recalibrate. Because “tactile sensor” can mean a capacitive touch button, force-sensitive resistor (FSR), tactile array, or force/torque transducer, use this as a general workflow and consult the exact model’s manual for wiring, operating limits, recalibration, and service instructions.
1. Identify what “inconsistent” looks like in the raw readings
Record the unprocessed sensor output over time rather than relying only on a displayed value or a filtered application reading. Keep the contact, load, and environment as repeatable as possible: note the no-contact baseline, apply a consistent touch or force, hold it, then remove it and observe the return.
- Noise: brief peaks or fluctuations while the sensor is untouched under otherwise stable conditions.
- Drift: output continues to change while a load is held, or after it has been applied or removed.
- Hysteresis: the reading does not return quickly or fully to its original value after loading and unloading.
- Saturation: output reaches its limit or reports an out-of-range condition because the signal or load exceeds the device’s range.
- Taxel mismatch: one or more sensing points in an array respond differently from nearby points under comparable contact.
These patterns point toward different checks; smoothing all of them can hide a fault rather than resolve it. Bota’s troubleshooting guidance describes noise, drift, and hysteresis in these terms, while SCHUNK identifies out-of-range signals or loads as a cause of saturation: Bota force/torque sensor manual and SCHUNK FTD commissioning instructions.
2. Check the measurement range and operating conditions
Confirm the sensor is not being overloaded
Compare the observed force or signal with the sensor’s documented range. If the device reports saturation or an out-of-range condition, stop applying force and follow its manual. SCHUNK notes that a persistent error after force application is paused can indicate overload or a disconnected supply; do not assume it is only a software issue.

Allow operating conditions to stabilize
Temperature changes can shift readings, and capacitive touch systems may also be affected by humidity. If the manufacturer specifies a stabilization period or operating conditions, observe them before comparing readings. Record relevant environmental changes alongside the raw signal so a changing baseline is not mistaken for a failed sensor.
3. Rule out electrical noise and unstable connections
Inspect the supply, grounding, connectors, cable routing and strain relief. Check whether readings change when nearby equipment operates, when cables move, or when the sensor is exposed to vibration. SCHUNK identifies vibration and electrical interference as possible noise sources and recommends grounding and isolation; Bota also points to electrical disturbance and poor grounding.
- With the sensor unloaded, observe the raw output under stable conditions.
- Check connectors and cables for looseness, damage, or movement that coincides with spikes.
- Review grounding and isolation against the device instructions; do not improvise wiring changes outside the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Temporarily separate likely interference or vibration sources where safe, then compare the readings.
As SCHUNK puts it in its FTD commissioning instructions: “Ensure that the system is properly grounded and isolated from external electrical interference.” A component failure can still be responsible, so a clean-looking cable or ground does not prove the sensor is healthy.

4. Inspect mounting, contact geometry, and mechanical coupling
Readings can vary even when electronics are stable if the sensor is mounted unevenly or the force reaches it differently from one test to the next. Inspect the mounting surface for flatness and contamination, check the adapter or supporting structure, and confirm that overlays, adhesives, or other parts do not constrain or unevenly distribute movement.
- Repeat the same contact at the same location and angle; avoid edge or point loading unless the sensor is designed for it.
- Check that mounting pressure, adhesive coverage, overlay thickness, and contact area are consistent.
- Look for dirt on the sensor body or adapter plate and clean only as the manual permits.
- Where the equipment allows it, test components separately to isolate a mechanical constraint from a sensing problem.
Sensitronics notes that irregular mounting surfaces, edge loading, and nonuniform actuation can make FSR readings unreliable. Bota identifies restricted mechanical coupling as a possible contributor to drift or hysteresis. Mounting and force transmission also matter when a sensor is installed on a curved or compliant surface; a calibration performed on a flat fixture may not represent that installed geometry, as discussed in a 2015 peer-reviewed tactile-sensor study: Tactile sensor study.
5. Apply checks specific to the sensor technology
FSRs and resistive tactile arrays
FSRs are proportional sensing devices, not precision instruments. Sensitronics gives ±2–5% as typical FSR repeatability in its application notes (accessed 2026; no publication year is stated on the page), so first decide whether that level is adequate for the task. If the application requires much tighter accuracy—for example, the page uses ±0.1% as an example requirement—it suggests considering a strain gauge or load cell instead. Those figures are application guidance, not guarantees for every device.

In a passive resistive matrix, ghost readings can arise from the readout arrangement. Sensitronics discusses scanning/readout approaches and software correction as mitigations. Arrays may also exhibit taxel-to-taxel variation, nonlinearity, drift, hysteresis, and crosstalk; evaluate the installed array rather than assuming each taxel behaves identically.
Capacitive touch sensors
A capacitive controller detects changes in capacitance relative to a reference. Temperature or humidity changes can shift that baseline, while detection thresholds and hysteresis are controller-level parameters. Check the controller’s configuration and documentation rather than applying FSR force-calibration practices to a touch button. Microchip explains touch thresholds, hysteresis, and drift behavior in its capacitive-touch documentation; it cautions that an occasional negative noise spike alone should not trigger recalibration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsForce/torque transducers
Follow the transducer’s specified commissioning and service procedure for range errors, supply faults, grounding, and calibration. Procedures are model-specific: SCHUNK’s FTD instructions, for example, state that the product must not be opened or disassembled and call for authorized repair or calibration. That restriction applies to that equipment, not automatically to every tactile sensor; check the manual for your own device.

6. Calibrate only after basic faults are ruled out
Calibration is appropriate when the sensor and readout are functioning, the installation is mechanically representative, and the readings still need a defined mapping to touch or force. For quantitative FSR measurements, calibrate the complete installed assembly—not just the unmounted film—with several known loads spread across the force range. Keep the mounting, overlay, contact area, and actuation geometry the same as in normal use. Sensitronics’ application note states: “Calibrate at the system level, not the bare sensor level.”
If you use calibration weights, choose masses that fit the sensor’s range and use a contact arrangement representative of the actual application. Weights alone do not provide a fixture, establish traceability, or make an unsuitable sensor accurate. For model-specific recalibration commands, service limits, or repair requirements, use the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Tune filtering or touch detection after diagnosis
Once you have ruled out overload, interference, unstable mechanics, and a failing connection, filtering can make a valid signal easier to use. Sensitronics suggests a single-pole RC cutoff of 10–50 Hz for many FSR human-interface touch applications; fast impacts or musical-instrument applications may need 100–500 Hz. These are vendor application suggestions, not universal settings for tactile sensors. A software moving average, exponential smoothing, or median filter can be easier to adjust, but excessive filtering can hide quick events or make the response feel delayed.

For capacitive touch, tune the controller’s threshold and hysteresis according to its documentation rather than importing those FSR filter ranges. Do not recalibrate solely because of an occasional negative noise spike if the controller guidance says it should not trigger recalibration.
When to stop troubleshooting and consult the manufacturer
- The device reports overload or out-of-range status that persists after the load is removed.
- Readings remain unstable after checking the supply, grounding, cables, environment, and mounting.
- You need wiring, allowable loads, calibration commands, or service limits that are not in the available documentation.
- The manual restricts opening or disassembly, or indicates authorized service is required.
Because tactile sensors differ substantially by technology and model, device-specific conclusions require the sensor model and its controller or readout system. Use those details to locate the correct manual and service procedure rather than assuming that instructions for another sensor type apply.
