Yes. Organizations participating in GitHub Sponsors can request invoice billing, then add funds to an invoice balance and use that balance for sponsorships. GitHub’s current guide sets a minimum of USD 5,000 per invoice, requires payment within 30 days, and says invoice billing avoids the card-processing fee but not GitHub’s service-processing fee. Switching from card billing cancels active sponsorships, so plan to recreate them.
What invoice billing means for GitHub Sponsors
Invoice billing is an organization payment option for GitHub Sponsors—not a general way to invoice sponsorships outside GitHub. An organization requests invoiced billing in its GitHub settings, creates an invoice in its Sponsors dashboard, and pays it. The paid amount becomes an invoice balance that can be applied to sponsorships over time without expiring. GitHub says these invoices are separate from invoices for its other services and are processed by Stripe, Inc. GitHub’s invoice guide has the current operational details.
Invoice versus card billing
| Consideration | Card billing | Invoice billing |
|---|---|---|
| Processing fees | GitHub documents a 3% card-processing fee plus a 3% GitHub service-processing fee for organization sponsorships, described as up to 6% total. | The 3% card-processing fee is avoided; the 3% GitHub service-processing fee still applies. |
| Minimum and due date | Not stated in the cited GitHub invoice guide. | USD 5,000 minimum per invoice; payment is due within 30 days. |
| How funding is used | Not stated in the cited GitHub invoice guide. | After payment, the invoice balance can fund sponsorships over time without expiration. Eligible organizations can choose to pay at the start of the next billing cycle when setting up a sponsorship. |
| Changing payment method | Switching away from card to invoice cancels active sponsorships. | After switching, sponsorships must be set up again; GitHub emails the organization a list of its active sponsorships before the change. |
These are GitHub’s currently documented terms; its fee guidance explains the fee components.
How to set up invoice billing
1. Prepare for the switch
Before changing billing, review the list of active sponsorships GitHub emails to the organization. Switching from card billing cancels those sponsorships and sends cancellation email to the sponsored projects. Keep the list so you can recreate the sponsorships after invoice billing is active. GitHub’s invoice instructions also point to a bulk sponsorship tool for setting them up again.
2. Request invoice billing
- Sign in to the organization account and open Settings → Billing and licensing → GitHub Sponsors.
- Select Switch to invoiced billing and submit the form.
- When the process is complete, an organization owner receives an email link to create an invoice.
3. Create and pay an invoice
- In the organization’s Sponsoring → Invoices area, select Create an invoice.
- Enter an amount of at least USD 5,000. A purchase-order number is optional.
- Create the invoice and pay it within 30 days. GitHub says invoices are emailed to the organization’s billing email address.
4. Use the invoice balance
Once the invoice is paid, select the invoice balance as the payment method while setting up sponsorships. The balance can be used over time and does not expire. During sponsorship setup, invoice-paying organizations can also select payment at the start of the next billing cycle instead of paying the prorated amount at setup.

Agreement term and the 2024 change
GitHub’s current invoice guide says the Invoiced Sponsor Agreement lasts three years and must then be renewed. The June 3, 2024 GitHub Changelog announcement described a change to where the service agreement appears: it moved from the invoice request flow into GitHub Sponsors Additional Terms. GitHub said existing invoicing arrangements and current agreements would remain unchanged by that interface change.
