What changed when PHP source moved to GitHub?
In a March 20, 2012 announcement, GitHub said PHP’s core source code had migrated to Git and was available on the platform. The PHP core team had selected Git as its distributed version-control system the previous fall; the announcement does not give an exact decision date. The move provided a hosted home for the source and a workflow for collaboration.
At the time, GitHub described the repository as 13 years old and containing more than 80,000 commits. Those are figures reported in the 2012 announcement, not current repository statistics. David Soria Parra, identified there as PHP 5.4 release manager, put together a workflow for core committers to merge GitHub pull requests. He said: “Using github was one of the most important reasons to switch to git in the first place.”
The announcement describes a way to submit and review work, not automatic acceptance of contributions or a replacement for PHP’s decision-making process. The current repository says new features require an RFC and acceptance by developers; bug fixes follow a separate path.

Where to find PHP source today
The official repository is php/php-src. It contains the PHP interpreter source code and identifies its license as Modified BSD (BSD-3-Clause). You can inspect files in a browser, fork the project, or retrieve the source using Git. PHP.net’s Git Access page provides current instructions for accessing the repository.
Choose the route that matches what you need:
- To work with current development: use Git access. This can provide fixes and updates without waiting for an official release.
- To build a particular version: use the source package for a versioned release from PHP’s release archive and follow the associated release information.
- To run PHP without building it yourself: use a suitable prebuilt binary or package for your platform. A source checkout is not required for ordinary PHP use.
What building PHP from source involves
The repository’s build guidance describes a flow that includes generating the configure script, configuring the build, compiling, and running tests. The exact tools, dependencies, and configuration options vary by operating system and build choices, so use the repository’s current build and installation guidance rather than relying on commands copied from an older guide.

Source access is free, but compiling PHP is a developer task: it may require a compiler, build utilities, and platform-specific libraries. Consult the repository’s contribution guidance as well if your goal is to submit a change, since the appropriate process depends on whether you are proposing a feature or fixing a bug.
