Request your driving record from the official motor-vehicle agency in the state that issued your license. Start on that agency’s website and search for “driver record,” “driving history,” or “motor vehicle record.” Before ordering, confirm what the recipient needs, the available history period, whether the copy is certified, the current fee, and the delivery method—these rules vary by state.

How do I get a copy of my driving record?

  1. Find the issuing state’s official agency. Use the state government website for the state that issued your license. The agency may have a name other than DMV. Search its site for “driver record,” “driving history,” or “motor vehicle record.” State agencies provide their own records; a vehicle history or registration record is a different document. California DMV, West Virginia DMV, and Virginia DMV illustrate the state-specific approach.
  2. Ask the organization that requested the record what it will accept. Check whether it needs a certified copy, how many years of history it requires, and whether it will accept a downloaded copy or needs a mailed original. Confirm this before paying; states may offer different record types through different request routes.
  3. Choose a route offered by that state. Look for online, mail, in-person, or other listed options. Do not assume every route is available in every state or provides the same format or certification.
  4. Follow the selected route’s current instructions. Depending on the state and method, you may need an account, request form, license details, identification, payment, or notarization. Use the agency’s stated fee and requirements rather than another state’s example.
  5. Save or collect the record as instructed. Check the delivery estimate and any download-access limit. If the record is for a deadline, allow for the state’s stated processing and delivery time.

Can I request my driving record online, or do I have to go in person?

It depends on the issuing state and the kind of record you need. Official examples include several routes: California offers an online view-and-print option, while its certified-copy request is by mail; Delaware describes online, mail, and in-person options; and West Virginia lists online, in-person, mail, and email requests for an individual’s own record. These are examples, not a list of options guaranteed in other states. Check the issuing agency’s instructions for the route and record type you need.

How much does a DMV driving record cost?

There is no single nationwide price established here. Fees are state-specific and may depend on the request method or record type. For example, the California DMV lists $2 for a record requested through its Internet interface and $5 for a mailed request; those are California-specific fees, and the page does not state a publication year. Check your state agency’s current fee before submitting payment.

Do I need a certified driving record?

Only the organization requesting the record can tell you what it will accept. Ask whether it requires certification, the history period it wants, and whether it accepts an electronic download. State options differ: California describes its online record as view-and-print and directs people seeking a certified copy to request one by mail using form INF 1125. Delaware says eligible license holders can purchase a certified record online. See the agencies’ current instructions for California and Delaware.

What details, history period, and delivery should I check?

Compare the options the state actually offers against the recipient’s requirements. A “full history” selection is not available everywhere, and a record’s scope can vary. For instance, Delaware offers three-year, five-year, or full-history selections; California says current driver records include reportable convictions for three, seven, or ten years, departmental actions, and accidents, and notes that its former H6/10-year record is no longer available. Those are state-specific descriptions, not a national definition of what a driving record contains.

Delivery can also differ by route. Delaware says an online purchase can be downloaded after payment and accessed for up to 90 days. Virginia says a record requested by mail will be mailed within five business days and advises that the address on the driver’s license or ID be current. Neither timeline should be treated as a service standard for another state.

Can I request someone else’s driving record?

Do not assume another person’s complete driving record is public or freely available. States may require authorization or another qualifying legal basis, and may restrict personal information. California uses separate procedures for a person’s own record and third-party requests and says confidential details such as an address or Social Security number are not public. West Virginia describes written authorization or other qualifying bases for many requests about another person. Review the relevant state agency’s rules before requesting anyone else’s record: California and West Virginia.

What if my driving record contains an error?

Use the issuing state’s correction or dispute process rather than relying on a third-party service to change the official record. California directs drivers to forms for reporting an incorrect driver record or traffic-collision record. Check the agency’s current instructions for the relevant correction process: California DMV driver-record requests.
