The U.S. Navy has installed shipboard laser systems intended to counter drones, but public sources do not confirm that sailors use Xbox-style controllers to fire its ODIN or HELIOS systems. NAVSEA says those systems use a Laser Weapon System Console; it does not identify that console as an Xbox controller. Game-style controls have been discussed in other military contexts, which is not proof of the interface used for these particular lasers.
Does the Navy use Xbox controllers to fire shipboard lasers?
That claim is not established for ODIN or HELIOS by the public sources cited here. A controller that looks like a gamepad, if used in another military application, does not show how either shipboard system is controlled. Nor does the existence of a console establish that its interface is a consumer Xbox controller.
Reports from WBUR and WIRED discuss game-style controls in military contexts, but neither ties such a controller to ODIN or HELIOS. The sources describe an operator interface only at a high level; they do not document a controller’s role in targeting, tracking, authorization, or firing these lasers.
What is the Navy’s ODIN laser?
ODIN stands for Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy. In a February 20, 2020 release, the Navy said it had recently installed its first ODIN and described it as a laser weapon system that enables a ship to counter unmanned aerial systems. The release also projected that units would become operational across the fleet within the next couple of years. That was a forecast made in 2020, not a current fleet count. U.S. Navy, February 20, 2020.

ODIN’s status requires a date-specific qualification: in a May 18, 2026 account, Naval Sea Systems Command said it was not a Navy program of record at that time. The same report describes training work at the Directed Energy Systems Integration Lab in response to fleet use and system maturation. NAVSEA, May 18, 2026.
What does HELIOS do on a Navy ship?
HELIOS means High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance. Lockheed Martin describes it as combining a high-energy laser and optical dazzler with long-range intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance functions. The manufacturer says the system is integrated into the ship and its combat system. Lockheed Martin, January 9, 2021.

HELIOS is not another name for ODIN. The Congressional Research Service distinguishes ODIN as a bolt-on capability from HELIOS, which is integrated with the ship’s combat system. That describes their architectures; by itself, it does not establish comparative performance or effectiveness. Congressional Research Service, Navy Shipboard Lasers: Background and Issues for Congress.
How do ODIN and HELIOS compare?
| System | Mission or functions described | Architecture | Interface information disclosed |
|---|---|---|---|
| ODIN | The Navy describes it as a laser weapon system for countering unmanned aerial systems. | Bolt-on capability, according to the Congressional Research Service. | NAVSEA says ODIN uses the Laser Weapon System Console. It does not identify the console as an Xbox controller. |
| HELIOS | Lockheed Martin describes a high-energy laser, optical dazzler, and surveillance functions. | Integrated with the ship and combat system, according to Lockheed Martin and the Congressional Research Service. | NAVSEA says HELIOS uses the Laser Weapon System Console. It does not identify the console as an Xbox controller. |
NAVSEA says ODIN, HELIOS, and the Solid State Laser Technology Maturation system employ the same user interface, called the Laser Weapon System Console. The account does not specify its hardware or describe a gamepad. NAVSEA, May 18, 2026.

What is known—and not known—about operating these lasers?
The public accounts cited here establish that ODIN and HELIOS are shipboard directed-energy systems and disclose a shared console name. They do not explain the full operator workflow or identify an Xbox-style controller as the device used to fire either system. It would be inaccurate to infer the targeting or firing process from the appearance of a controller used elsewhere.
The Navy’s 2020 ODIN announcement quoted then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition James F. Geurts describing the installation as a collaboration among warfare-center personnel and the ship’s company. His comment concerned the workforce and delivery of ODIN; it does not substantiate a gamepad connection. U.S. Navy, February 20, 2020.

Why do reports mention game-style controls?
Game-style controllers have appeared in reporting about other military systems, and WBUR has discussed them in a military laser context. Those examples may explain the headline’s appeal, but they cannot be used as evidence that ODIN or HELIOS has the same control scheme. WBUR, June 7, 2024; WIRED, 2024.
