Vivaldi offers configurable tracker blocking and optional encrypted Sync, but it is not a no-data-collection browser and it does not make you anonymous. Vivaldi’s privacy policy describes a small daily telemetry message, and its Sync service retains metadata even though Vivaldi says synced entries are encrypted before upload. Its safety also depends on keeping the browser updated and understanding what built-in warnings can—and cannot—catch.
What data does Vivaldi collect?
Vivaldi’s Browser Privacy Policy says each installation profile receives a unique ID stored on the device. Every 24 hours, the browser sends an HTTPS message to Vivaldi’s servers in Iceland containing that ID, the browser version, CPU architecture, screen resolution, and time since the previous message. That is limited telemetry as described by Vivaldi, not zero data collection. The policy describes what Vivaldi says it receives; it is not an independent audit of network traffic.
Crash logs and passwords
Automated crash-log sharing is a separate setting. Vivaldi says a detailed log may include personal data present in relevant memory sections; it processes received crash data to extract a stack trace. The browser also has a built-in password manager that uses operating-system password storage frameworks, with encryption where the framework supports it. These details are in Vivaldi’s policy.
Default bookmarks
Vivaldi says some default bookmarks are partner sites and that it receives shared revenue from those partners. The policy says bookmark choices are intended to be useful regardless of revenue. This is a business-model disclosure, not an indication that browsing history is shared with bookmark partners.

How effective is Vivaldi’s tracker and ad blocking?
On desktop, Vivaldi lets you choose among three global blocking levels: no blocking, tracker blocking, or tracker-and-ad blocking. You can make exceptions for individual sites, manage rule sources, and view blocked trackers. Cookie-warning hiding is available through blocker lists. The controls are useful, but having them does not establish a universal blocking rate: results depend on the selected level, enabled lists, and the sites you visit.
Set the blocking level and review exceptions
Vivaldi’s desktop help documents the blocking levels, per-site controls, and rule-source management under its Privacy and Security Settings. Choose tracker-and-ad blocking if you want both categories blocked, and check site-specific exceptions if a page behaves unexpectedly. You can also review the blocker’s display of blocked trackers rather than treating it as a measurement of all tracking prevented.

What Vivaldi says about privacy-test results
Vivaldi says its protection blocks known tracking sites. In its security FAQ, the company argues that some third-party test methods emphasize different approaches and may not reflect Vivaldi’s list-based method; it also says those methods can cause website breakage. That is Vivaldi’s explanation, not independent validation of its blocker or proof that a test is invalid. No blocker catches every tracker, and a test result should be interpreted in light of its methods and configuration.
What does Vivaldi Sync encrypt—and what remains visible?
Sync is optional: it applies when you choose to enable it. Vivaldi says the browser encrypts each synced data item before sending it to servers in Iceland, then decrypts retrieved items in the browser using your key. Its privacy policy also lists service metadata Vivaldi retains to manage Sync. That includes account association, connection times, encryption information, item type, deletion status, parent relationships, client identifier, and creation or modification times.

The practical distinction is that Vivaldi describes synced content as encrypted, while also acknowledging metadata needed to operate the service. The policy’s description should not be expanded into a claim that Vivaldi learns nothing, or treated as an independently verified guarantee about the service.
What do Vivaldi’s security and privacy settings protect?
Vivaldi’s desktop settings include Google Safe Browsing, enabled by default according to its settings help. Vivaldi says it receives a file describing known malicious URLs through an approximation method rather than sending the service provider a list of sites you visit. Safe Browsing can warn about known phishing and malware sites, but an absent warning does not prove a site is safe.

Do Not Track and WebRTC
Do Not Track sends a request that websites can ignore; it does not force sites to stop tracking. Vivaldi’s desktop setting documents WebRTC IP broadcasting as enabled by default. Disabling it may help some VPN users protect privacy, but can impair features on some sites. These controls and their tradeoffs are described in Vivaldi’s desktop privacy settings.
Android controls differ from desktop
Vivaldi’s Android help documents platform-specific options for secure DNS, HTTPS-only behavior, locking private tabs when leaving the browser, and clearing data on exit. It also lists DNS provider choices. Consult the Android privacy settings guide for the controls available on that platform; do not assume every setting or label is identical across desktop and mobile.

Is Vivaldi secure, and how should you keep it safe?
Vivaldi says it reviews its code and follows Chromium Extended Stable, aiming to include applicable security patches promptly, including relevant fixes outside the ordinary schedule. Because Chromium Extended Stable version numbers can differ from Chromium Stable, a lower-looking number alone does not establish that patches are missing. These are Vivaldi’s stated practices, not an independent audit or a guarantee about the release installed on a particular device. Vivaldi explains its approach in its security information.

- Install available Vivaldi updates. Use the browser’s built-in update option for your platform, then confirm the version actually installed rather than inferring patch status from another browser’s version number.
- Choose blocker settings deliberately. Select the blocking level you want and review exceptions or rule sources if a site is not behaving as expected.
- Enable Sync only if it suits your needs. Treat the synced content and the retained service metadata as separate parts of the privacy decision.
