You can combine both, then add keyboard shortcuts for the actions you use most. Here’s how to set up each part and avoid common pitfalls.
Group related tabs in a Tab Stack
A Tab Stack keeps related tabs together inside a workspace. The quickest way to create one is to drag a tab onto another and release when the target tab shows the theme highlight.
Create a stack by dragging or selecting tabs
- Drag one tab onto another tab and release when the highlight appears. Rename or recolor the new stack later if you want.
- If dragging only reorders tabs, open Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stack Options and turn on Allow Stacking by Drag and Drop. Adjust Stacking Drop Delay if accidental stacks occur while you reorder tabs.
- For a deliberate selection, hold Shift and click the first and last tabs in a range, or hold Ctrl on Windows/Linux or ⌘ on macOS to select separate tabs. Right-click a selected tab and choose Stack # Selected Tabs. You can also run Stack Tabs from Quick Commands.
To group every open tab from the same website, right-click a tab and choose Stack (# Tabs by Host – website.com). To group tabs from multiple websites by their hosts, choose Stack Tabs by Hosts.
Collect related tabs automatically
Two settings control different behaviors. Enable Open Tabs in Current Tab Stack at Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stack Options to put tabs opened from links in the current stack into that stack. Alternatively, Settings > Tabs > New Tab Position > As Tab Stack with Related Tab creates a stack from the active tab and a newly opened link tab.

Choose how a stack appears and manage it
Go to Settings > Tabs > Tab Features > Tab Stacking to choose a display style. The best fit depends on how much tab-bar space you want to use and whether you prefer stack members to remain visible.

Right-click a stack and choose Edit to rename it or change its color. To dissolve a stack, right-click it and choose Stack, or run Unstack Tabs in Quick Commands. To take out just one tab while leaving the group intact, right-click that tab and choose Remove from Tab Stack.
Pinning a stack helps protect it and its member tabs from accidental closure. Its context menu also includes options to hibernate it, bookmark it, copy its links, save a session, tile its tabs, reload it, or move it to another workspace or window.

Create a Workspace for a separate context
A Workspace is a broader grouping for tabs and stacks, such as one for work and another for research. To create one, click the Workspaces button on the Tab Bar and choose New Workspace. Choose whether to start with an empty workspace or move the tabs in the current window, then enter a name and select an icon. You can also run Create New Workspace in Quick Commands.
Make a Workspace from tabs you already have open
Select the tabs you want to move, right-click the selection, and choose Move # Tabs > Workspace > Create Workspace with Selected Tabs. Tabs and Tab Stacks can coexist in a Workspace.
Rename, reorder, and move tabs
Use the Workspaces menu to rename a Workspace or change its icon. New Workspaces appear at the bottom of the list; drag them to reorder. To move tabs between Workspaces, drag them between Workspace folders in the Window Panel, or use the tab context menu’s Move Tab or Move # Tabs > Workspace command.

A Workspace can be open in only one browser window at a time. Selecting one that is already open in another window focuses that window instead of opening a duplicate Workspace. Deleting a Workspace closes its tabs, so move any tabs you need to keep before deleting it.
Switch Workspaces and optionally automate routing
Choose the method that fits how you navigate. The menu and Window Panel work well for visual selection; Quick Commands and configured shortcuts suit keyboard navigation.

- Workspaces menu: click the Workspaces button on the Tab Bar and select a Workspace.
- Quick Commands: search for a Workspace by name, or run Next Workspace or Previous Workspace.
- Mouse: scroll the wheel over the Workspaces button.
- Window Panel: select a Workspace there.
- Vivaldi menu: use Window > Other Workspaces and Tabs.
Vivaldi Help gives Ctrl+Shift+3 on Windows/Linux and ⌘+Shift+3 on macOS as an example of a shortcut for the third Workspace. It also documents shortcuts for Next Workspace and Previous Workspace. Treat the third-Workspace combination as an example, not a guaranteed active binding: shortcut assignments can be customized.

Optional: move tabs automatically with Workspace Rules
To route tabs by criteria, open Settings > Tabs > Workspaces, select Add New Workspace Rule, set the criteria, and choose the destination Workspace. For example, Vivaldi’s Help describes a rule that sends URLs containing bbc.com to a News Workspace. Rules are optional; you can organize tabs manually instead.
Configure shortcuts for routine actions
Open Settings > Keyboard, find the action, focus its shortcut field, and press the key combination you want. If the combination is already assigned, remove the existing binding first if needed. Vivaldi allows more than one shortcut for the same action.
- To clear a binding, hover over it and choose Clear Shortcut, or select it and press Backspace or Delete.
- To reset one shortcut, choose Restore Default Shortcut. To reset all shortcuts, choose Restore Default Keys.
- To see the shortcut cheat sheet, press Ctrl+F1 on Windows/Linux or ⌘+F1 on macOS. Settings > Keyboard also lists shortcuts.
Resolve conflicts with website shortcuts
A webpage may use the same key combination as a browser action. To give Vivaldi priority, add the combination under Settings > Keyboard > Browser Priority Shortcuts. If you want website shortcuts to take priority on a particular site, Vivaldi also documents Prioritize Website Shortcuts under Settings > Privacy and Security > Website Permissions.

Use keyboard actions to select tabs
For a consecutive range of tabs, use Shift-click; for separate tabs, use Ctrl-click on Windows/Linux or ⌘-click on macOS. Quick Commands also include Select Previous Tab, Select Next Tab, Select Related Tabs, and Deselect Tabs. To assign keys to these actions, open Settings > Keyboard > Tabs.
If a setting or shortcut is different
The steps here reflect Vivaldi Browser Help pages for Workspaces, Tab Stacks, Keyboard Shortcuts, and Tab Features checked on October 4, 2026. Those pages do not establish a current desktop version or exact revision dates, and labels can vary by release or platform. If a listed setting is not where expected, search in Settings or use Quick Commands to find the action. Your shortcut bindings may also differ from the examples if they have been changed.
