Goalie equipment has to do more than absorb shots: it must let a goalie move, drop into a save, seal gaps against the ice and recover for the next play. Each piece has a different protective or playing function, while fit affects whether the gear stays in position without restricting movement. NHL rules are league-specific; youth and recreational goalies should follow their own league’s requirements and get help from someone experienced in fitting goalie equipment.
What does each piece of goalie equipment do?
The main pieces protect different areas while helping a goalie block, catch or play the puck. Their functions are distinct, and one player’s setup is not a universal fit prescription.
Leg pads
Leg pads protect the lower legs and knees and create a broad surface for blocking shots. Their face and foam construction can also affect rebounds. NHL.com reported in 2023 that modern pads may weigh around or under five pounds each; that is an approximate figure from equipment reporting, not a league-wide measurement.
Some pad designs aim to produce softer rebounds that stay closer to the goalie. Others send the puck farther from attackers near the crease, potentially giving the goalie more time to reposition. Neither rebound behavior is automatically best in every situation.

Chest and arm protector
This protector covers the torso, shoulders and arms. The NHL’s 2022-23 Official Rules, Section 3, Rule 11.3, state: “The chest and arm protector worn by each goalkeeper must be anatomically proportional and size specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper.” The rule is intended to preserve protection without adding extra stopping area. Its wording and any measurements in older rule material should not be treated as confirmation of exact limits for the current NHL season.
Blocker and catching glove
The blocker is worn on the stick hand and presents a protective surface for blocking pucks. The catching glove is worn on the other hand to catch or control them. These are separate pieces with different jobs; the available NHL sources do not provide a complete construction or sizing guide for either.

Helmet or mask, skates, stick and pelvic protection
- Helmet or mask: protects the head and face.
- Skates: support a goalie’s stance and movement on the ice.
- Stick: helps block and play pucks.
- Pelvic protection: guards a vulnerable area.
NHL.com reported in 2017 that some interviewed goalies used goalie double-cups or layered additional protection. Those were individual practices described at that time, not a universal current rule or recommendation.
How should goalie pads fit?
The useful goal is a consistent position that lets each pad rotate and sit flat enough to seal the ice, without sacrificing comfort or protection. Strapping influences how reliably pads stay in place and move with the goalie. Modern designs use high-density foam and lighter strapping than older leather-and-buckle designs, but the preferred feel varies: some goalies like a looser setup that allows rotation, while others prefer a tighter, more connected feel.

Choose fit around the goalie’s movement and comfort rather than assuming a single strap tension or setup suits everyone. Pads that shift unpredictably, interfere with movement or fail to settle into a consistent ice seal warrant attention from a goalie-equipment fitter.
Why do goalie pads look different from player pads?
Goalie pads are designed around blocking and sealing gaps, while player pads are designed to protect within the demands of skating and stickhandling. A goalie pad’s broad face and construction also shape how it directs rebounds. NHL.com’s 2023 feature describes the ongoing evolution of pad design; Los Angeles Kings director of goaltending Bill Ranford reflected, “Equipment companies are evolving and coming up with some unbelievable changes from my time.” That is a historical perspective, not a technical fit standard.

What fit checks are useful—and what do they not establish?
The NHL Ready to Play guide offers beginner-level checks for hockey equipment: shoulder-pad caps should align with the center of the shoulders; elbow-pad straps should be tight enough to prevent movement; shin pads should cover the knee and shin; and the helmet should meet the approval guidance in that guide’s context. These general-player tips are not a comprehensive goalie fitting protocol and do not replace league-specific requirements.
For the chest and arm protector, the NHL’s 2022-23 rulebook establishes the proportional, size-specific principle, but it is not sufficient to verify exact 2026-27 equipment limits. NHL equipment rules can change, so consult the rulebook for the season in question rather than relying on older numerical limits. Players outside the NHL should check their own league’s rules and seek goalie-specific fitting help.
