To fix low happiness in Farthest Frontier, open the Town Center’s Happiness tab, identify which need is failing, and address that specific problem. Start with food, health, and shelter; then check developing needs and nearby shelter desirability. The official guide documents happiness as a system, not “unrest” as a separate named mechanic, so treat unrest as a description of unhappy or stressed villagers unless your game’s UI identifies another system.
Diagnose the problem in the Town Center
Select the Town Center and open its Happiness tab. It summarizes villagers’ needs and satisfaction, making it the best starting point for identifying the cause instead of adding services at random. The official Farthest Frontier game guide defines happiness as a measure of people’s satisfaction with living in the frontier.
Use the category shown as deficient to choose your next action. Needs become more complex as the settlement prospers, so a service that helped earlier may not address the current shortfall.
Fix foundational needs first
Food
Keep food supplies reliable. The official guide warns that prolonged low food supplies or hunger raises stress. If the Happiness tab points to food, focus on restoring supply before spending resources on optional amenities.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY TO LEARN, QUICK TO SET UP: Plays in 60-90 minutes with minimal table space. A perfect gateway for new strategy gamers, families with teens, and fans of Catan, Splendor, and Spice Road who want something fresh.
- THREE STRATEGIC DECKS: Trade cards build gold, Influence cards create ongoing effects you trigger every turn, and Specialty cards unlock powerful one-shot abilities and victory points. Mix and match for a different game every time.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: Race through medieval trade routes, collect resources to convert into victory points, or build a card engine that pays off late. First to 20 victory points wins, but how you get there is up to you.
- UPGRADE YOUR TRADER: Three permanent upgrade tracks let you move farther, draw more cards, and play more from your hand. Spend gold to compound your options as the game accelerates.
- FITS IN A BACKPACK: 7-inch box sets up in 5 minutes on any table. Easy to throw in a bag for trips and game nights without hauling a giant box around.
Health and shelter
Health and adequate housing are also fundamental needs. Unsanitary conditions and inadequate shelter can affect villagers’ satisfaction, so check the relevant services and living conditions when either category is low.
Match later services to the needs shown
As the town develops, villagers may expect more than basic survival. The guide lists shoes, clothes, family support, beer, entertainment, luxuries, and spirituality among the needs that can matter as prosperity grows. Use the Happiness tab to determine which one needs attention; building every possible service without checking the diagnosis can waste resources.

Improve shelter desirability with careful placement
When shelter desirability is the issue, turn on the Desirability overlay with the default G key. Check the overlay and the placement preview before locating homes or nearby buildings. The official desirability guide identifies markets and healer’s houses as buildings that improve nearby desirability; parks and shrines can help as decorations. Many production buildings reduce desirability, so place sources of smoke, noise, or smell away from homes.
- Do not assume duplicates always stack. A shelter benefits only once from the desirability of a service building, and some repeated decorations provide no additional benefit.
- Consider variety. A mix of decoration types may help more than repeating one type.
- Watch upgraded homes. If an upgraded shelter warns that it may be abandoned, restore desirability in the surrounding area before the condition progresses. Falling below the desirability requirement can lead to abandonment; prolonged abandonment can leave villagers without occupancy and contribute to exposure.
The official overlays guide explains how to use the desirability overlay. The retrieved official guide pages do not specify current numeric happiness percentages or desirability thresholds, so use the in-game indicators rather than relying on a universal target.

Use policies as a secondary adjustment
Town Center policies can affect happiness, but consider their broader effects before changing them. The Town Center guide says each policy can be toggled every 12 months. Treat policies as a way to respond to a specific situation, not a substitute for correcting a shortage or poor living conditions.

- Open the Town Center and inspect the Happiness tab.
- Correct any food, health, or shelter problem it identifies.
- Check which additional need is unmet, and provide the matching service or good as the settlement grows.
- If shelter desirability is low, press G, inspect nearby buildings and placement previews, and move harmful production away from homes or add suitable services and varied decorations.
- Respond promptly to an upgraded shelter’s abandonment warning, then consider whether a policy change is appropriate.
These mechanics are described in Crate Entertainment’s official guide pages, whose retrieved content did not show a publication date or specify a game version. Exact thresholds may therefore vary; the in-game Happiness tab and desirability indicators are the actionable references.
