Start with the new browser’s built-in import tool, but do not expect it to copy everything. The options depend on the browser pair and the source profile it detects: bookmarks, passwords, history, autofill, and extensions may each be handled differently. If automatic detection fails, bookmark HTML is a useful fallback; passwords need their own compatible migration route.
What can you import into a new Linux browser?
There is no universal “settings” package that moves every part of an old browser profile. An import wizard offers a specific set of categories for the browser and profile it finds. Depending on the pair, those may include bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, form autofill, or some extensions. Cookies, open sessions, every extension, and every preference are not guaranteed to transfer. Check the categories shown in your installed browser rather than assuming the label “settings” means everything.
Browser versions and installation types can affect which sources appear. The official instructions do not provide a complete matrix for every Linux distribution, Flatpak, Snap, or native package, so use the menus and current help for the version you have installed.
Try the destination browser’s import wizard first
Import data into Firefox

Open Firefox Settings and choose Import Data in the browser-data import section. Another documented route is the Bookmarks Library: Import and Backup → Import Data from Another Browser.

Choose the detected source browser and profile, then select the data categories Firefox offers for that source. Mozilla lists bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, form autofill, and some Chrome extensions when similar Firefox versions exist among possible items. A system-password prompt may appear. See Mozilla’s import instructions for current options.
Import data into Brave

Open Brave and choose Bookmarks → Import Bookmarks and Settings.

Select the detected browser, choose the appropriate source profile, and select the categories to import. For Firefox, Brave requires the Firefox profile to remain installed and intact. Follow Brave’s Firefox migration instructions if that source is missing or unclear.

Use an HTML file if the old browser is not detected
Bookmark HTML is the practical cross-browser fallback when the destination wizard does not list the old browser. In the old browser, export bookmarks as an HTML file; in the new browser, choose its bookmark import option and select that file. Mozilla documents this route when a source browser is not listed, and Chrome documents HTML export and import in its bookmark instructions.
Imported bookmarks may appear in a different folder or area than expected. Chrome says they can appear on the bookmarks bar if it is empty, or under Other bookmarks if bookmarks are already present. Inspect the imported folder before trying again; repeating an import can create duplicates.
Move passwords separately from bookmarks
A bookmark HTML file does not carry saved passwords. Password migration depends on the exact source and destination browsers, so check their current password-import instructions rather than applying one browser pair’s steps to another.

Chrome passwords and Firefox
Mozilla documents a Chrome password CSV route through Firefox’s migration wizard. Its notice about automatic Chrome password import being unavailable is specifically about Windows, not Linux: Mozilla says the interface change is rolling out from Firefox 139 for English UI and Firefox 140 for all locales. Do not treat that Windows caveat as a Linux limitation; check the options in your installed Firefox. See Mozilla’s current instructions.
Chrome passwords and Brave
Brave says Chrome passwords cannot be brought over with its standard browser-data import because of Chrome’s password encryption approach. Its documented alternative is to export passwords from Chrome and import them into Brave separately. The exact menus can change, so use Brave’s browsing-data instructions.

A password export file contains credentials. Keep it in a protected location only as long as needed for transfer, complete the import, then delete the file securely. Do not leave it in a shared folder or an unprotected USB drive.

Verify the migration before removing the old profile

Check that bookmark folders and a sample of important links are present.

Try a few saved logins and confirm that form autofill works if you rely on it.

Review the destination browser’s import summary and note any categories you did not select or that were unavailable.

Keep the old browser and profile until you have verified the data you need in the new one.
Can I import everything from Firefox to Brave on Linux?
Not necessarily. Brave can import selected data from Firefox when the Firefox profile is still installed and intact, but the wizard’s available categories—not the word “everything”—define what moves. If the profile is unavailable, bookmarks can be exported to HTML, while passwords require a separate supported export/import path. Check the resulting Brave profile before removing Firefox or its data.
