The changes include a redesigned interface, richer Google Maps navigation, parked video in supported cars, and expanded Gemini features. Availability will depend on the car, app, account, country, language and, for some features, phone software.
What’s new in Android Auto?
Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement describes several changes arriving over the course of the year. Android Auto brings compatible phone apps to a car display; it is distinct from Google built-in, where Google services run directly in the vehicle. Some announced features apply across both experiences, while others depend on a car’s hardware or compatibility.
| Area | What Google announced | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Material 3 Expressive styling, widgets, edge-to-edge Maps, and layouts adapted to different screen shapes | Rolling out throughout 2026; Google has not given a date for each car |
| Google Maps | Immersive Navigation with 3D buildings, overpasses and terrain, plus lane, traffic-light and stop-sign details | Google’s description of planned capabilities, not independent performance testing |
| Entertainment | Video apps including YouTube, with full-HD playback at 60 frames per second; Dolby Atmos for supported apps | Video is for parked use, in supported cars; Atmos also requires a supported app and car |
| Gemini | More natural voice interactions and, later in 2026, contextual suggestions and food ordering | Feature availability varies; some Gemini functions were already beginning to roll out in 2025 |
A redesigned interface, including widgets
The visual refresh uses Google’s Material 3 Expressive design and is intended to fit a wider range of car-screen shapes. Google says widgets can provide quick access to items such as favorite contacts, a garage-door opener and weather. Maps can extend edge to edge on the display.
Maps adds more visual navigation detail
Google calls the change Immersive Navigation and describes 3D buildings, overpasses and terrain, alongside lane, traffic-light and stop-sign details intended to help drivers handle turns and merges. Google characterized it as its “biggest update to Google Maps in over a decade”; that is Google’s description of the update, not an independently verified comparison.

Can you watch YouTube on Android Auto?
Google says video apps such as YouTube will offer full-HD video at 60 frames per second while the car is parked, in supported vehicles. The video feature is planned to roll out later in 2026. Android Developers says parked video will be available on compatible vehicles for users with phones running Android 17 or higher.
When the car moves, playback can switch to audio-only in apps that support background audio. That does not mean video remains available to watch while driving. Dolby Atmos is also planned, but only for supported apps and cars.
Google’s May 2026 announcement names starting-brand lists for video and Atmos, but does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility chart. A brand name alone therefore does not establish that a particular vehicle supports either feature.

What is Gemini doing in Android Auto?
Gemini’s voice assistant capabilities are separate from the interface and Maps changes. In a November 20, 2025 article, Google said a global Android Auto rollout was beginning in 45 languages for users who had switched from Assistant to Gemini on their phone. Google’s examples included asking for local recommendations in natural language, editing or translating messages, getting help with Gmail and calendar, requesting playlists and using Gemini Live.

Google’s May 2026 announcement describes additional Gemini Intelligence features planned for later that year. These include contextual Magic Cue suggestions based on information in texts, email or calendar, and ordering food, starting with DoorDash. These later announcements should not be confused with capabilities Google said were already beginning to roll out in 2025.
Availability is not universal: Google says features can vary by compatible vehicle features, account, country and language. For the 2025 Gemini rollout, the stated prerequisite was upgrading from Assistant to Gemini on the phone.

When is the new Android Auto update coming?
Google says the changes are coming to cars throughout 2026, rather than giving one launch date for the full refresh. It has not specified exact per-feature dates or a schedule for individual vehicle models. The parked-video feature is described as arriving later in 2026, with Android Developers specifying Android 17 or higher on the user’s phone and a compatible vehicle.
Google reported more than 250 million Android Auto-compatible cars on the road and more than 100 Google built-in models from 16 brands in its May 2026 announcement. Those are company-published figures, not independently audited measurements, and they do not indicate which individual cars will receive each feature.

The announcement does not include a complete model-by-model compatibility list, so there is no reliable answer based on make alone. Android Auto depends on a compatible phone-to-car connection; Google built-in cars run Google services directly in the vehicle. The exact feature set can differ between those setups and between vehicle models.

- Check your vehicle maker’s compatibility information and the Android Auto or app details for the specific feature.
- For parked video, confirm both vehicle compatibility and the Android 17-or-higher phone requirement.
- For Gemini, account, country and language availability can matter; the 2025 rollout also required switching to Gemini on the phone.
- For Dolby Atmos, check that both the car and the media app support it.
Google’s 2025 post reported more than 250 million cars supporting Android Auto and more than 50 Google built-in models. Those earlier figures are a dated snapshot and should not be mixed with the larger Google built-in count Google published in 2026.

Google says Android Auto is designed around driving-optimized apps, hands-free commands and safety lockouts—for example, preventing message typing while moving and limiting scrolling through large lists. These are design measures, not a guarantee that using the system is risk-free. Video is intended for when the car is parked; while moving, only audio may continue in apps that support background playback.
