On June 27, 2023, identity-verification company Socure announced it had acquired Berbix for approximately $70 million in cash and stock. Berbix specialized in checking identity documents and detecting fraudulent or spoofed IDs; Socure said it integrated Berbix’s technology into its document-verification offering.
What Socure bought and what the deal cost
Socure was the buyer and Berbix was the acquired company. Socure described the transaction as its first acquisition and put the consideration at approximately $70 million, paid in cash and stock. The figure and deal description come from Socure’s June 27, 2023 announcement; it is an announced approximate value, not a separately established breakdown of the cash and stock portions.
What Berbix’s technology did
Berbix focused on document-based identity verification: checking whether an identity document appeared genuine and helping detect fraudulent or spoofed IDs. Its Y Combinator company profile described the core customer question as, “Are you who you say you are?” The profile also described developer-friendly SDK access, a way for developers to incorporate verification into their applications.
How Socure said Berbix fit its products
Socure offered a broader identity and fraud platform, while Berbix brought a specialization in document checks. TechCrunch reported that Socure had already integrated Berbix into its existing document-verification service and described demand for online ID checks as complementary to Socure’s other tools. One example Socure CEO Johnny Ayers gave was confirming that “a driver applying to a grocery delivery service is who they say they are.” These descriptions explain the intended onboarding use case, not a guarantee that a particular check will identify fraud.

Predictive Document Verification 3.0
Socure announced Predictive Document Verification 3.0 alongside the acquisition, saying Berbix technology had been integrated with Socure technology. That describes the product positioning at the time of the June 2023 announcement; it does not establish the product’s current packaging, availability, or commercial terms. Socure’s claims about speed, accuracy, and fraud reduction in its announcement are vendor claims, not independently verified comparative results.

The acquisition brought Berbix’s document-verification capabilities into Socure’s broader identity and fraud offering, according to the companies’ announcement and contemporaneous reporting. It does not, by itself, establish how the combined service performs against competitors or how well it works in any specific customer deployment.
