Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore posting about a conflict, disable or limit location access on your device, camera, and social app; avoid check-ins and live updates from sensitive places; inspect photos and videos for clues in the scene; and remove location metadata when possible. Ask before identifying or tagging anyone else. These precautions reduce different ways a post can expose people, but no single setting guarantees anonymity or safety.
How can a conflict-related post reveal your location?
A post can disclose where you are directly or allow someone to infer it from several clues. A location tag or check-in is only one route: app permissions, media metadata, visible landmarks, timing, tags, and details spread across multiple posts can all contribute. Blocking one route does not block the others.
- Direct location: A post may include a place label or, if a service offers and you enable it, precise coordinates. X says its post-location feature is off until opted into; its in-app camera can attach precise coordinates alongside a location label when that option is enabled. See X’s location settings guidance.
- Media metadata: Photos and videos may carry information such as location, date, time, or device details. The Australian eSafety Commissioner warns that not all social media services remove metadata attached to images. Do not assume an upload will strip it.
- What the camera captured: Street signs, distinctive buildings, doorways, maps, uniforms, and other recognizable details can reveal a place even if location metadata is removed.
- Timing and context: Posting in real time, describing where you are, or combining details across a series of updates can expose a current or recurring location.
- Other people: A photo, tag, or caption can identify who attended a gathering as well as where and when it happened.
The Government of Canada’s Department of National Defence notes that “Photos can contain sensitive hidden data such as time, date, device information, and GPS coordinates — all of which can be exploited by adversaries.” Its Click. Post. Compromise? page is dated September 9, 2025.
What to check before you post
- Decide whether to post now. If the post could reveal your current position or a sensitive gathering, consider waiting until you have left. Delayed posting is one risk-reduction practice described by Internews guidance for journalists reporting on conflict.
- Review location access on the device. In your phone’s privacy or app-permissions settings, check whether the camera and social apps can access location. Restrict access if the app does not need it for the post.
- Check the camera and platform controls. Look for location or geotagging options in the camera, then check the social app’s post controls for location labels, check-ins, or location sharing. On X, location attachment is opt-in, and the in-app camera has a separate precise-location option; other services may work differently.
- Inspect the media file. Check whether a photo or video contains location or other identifying metadata. Remove it, or create a fresh copy without location data where appropriate. Because services differ, verify the result rather than relying on the platform to remove metadata.
- Review the visible frame. Crop or leave out street signs, landmarks, doorways, maps, distinctive interiors, or other details that could identify the place. Consider whether clothing, vehicle markings, or other contextual clues identify people or a group.
- Remove unnecessary tags and identifying details. Ask people before posting identifiable images of them, especially at protests or other sensitive gatherings. Privacy International advises against tagging people involved without consent in its UK protest-rights guide.
- Check who can see the post and who can access your location. Review the post’s audience, any shared-account access, and location-sharing services connected to your accounts. Meta recommends enabling two-factor authentication for Facebook and Instagram; its guidance is available at Facebook Help and Instagram Help.
Why turning off GPS is not enough
Disabling location access can reduce direct location disclosure, but it cannot remove clues already visible in an image or written in a caption. A distinctive building may identify a place; timestamps and a sequence of posts may narrow down when someone was there; and a tag can expose another person even if your own location setting is off. Treat device permissions, media, post details, audience, and timing as separate checks.

What changes when posting about a protest or sensitive gathering?
Images and live updates can reveal who attended, where a gathering took place, and when people were present. A post may expose someone other than the account holder, including people who have not agreed to be identified. Avoid live posting from a sensitive location, and do not tag or name other attendees without their consent.

These steps lower exposure through particular channels; they cannot make a post fully anonymous or prevent someone from saving or analyzing content. X cautions that posted content remains available for others to see, and Privacy International describes its protest-risk steps as imperfect rather than complete protection.
