Shielded payments use zero-knowledge proofs to let the network verify that a transaction is valid without publicly revealing protected details. But ZEC is not private by default in every transaction: the address types and pools involved affect what observers can see.
What Zcash privacy does—and does not—mean
Zcash combines a public payment model with a shielded one. A transparent transaction exposes details to public observers, while a shielded transaction is designed to protect specified transaction information. The protocol specification describes Zcash as bridging Bitcoin’s transparent payment scheme with a shielded payment scheme secured by zk-SNARKs: Zcash protocol specification.
That distinction matters: the network supports shielded payments, but not every ZEC transaction uses them. A transaction’s privacy depends on its address types and route, including whether value enters or leaves a shielded pool.
How zk-SNARKs validate shielded transactions
A zk-SNARK is a “zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive argument of knowledge.” It lets a prover demonstrate that a statement is true—or that they know information needed to establish it—without revealing that information to the verifier and without an interactive exchange.

In Zcash, shielded payments represent value in notes associated with shielded payment addresses. Commitments and zero-knowledge proofs allow the network to enforce transaction validity and consensus rules while keeping protected details from public view. The Zcash Foundation explains that shielded transaction details can be encrypted on-chain and still be checked against consensus rules: What are zk-SNARKs?
Transparent, Sapling, and Orchard: what differs
Transparent addresses and shielded pools have different disclosure properties. Sapling and Orchard are distinct shielded pools, each with its own anonymity set; shielding a payment does not merge those sets into one.

Orchard is a later shielded protocol introduced with NU5. NU5 activated at block 1687104 on May 31, 2022, and introduced Unified Addresses and the Halo proving system. The Orchard protocol specification documents its keys and addresses. Mainnet Unified Addresses use the u1 prefix and can bundle address types, an approach intended to make receiving across address types more interoperable. Where Zcash privacy can break down
Moving value between shielded pools or between a pool and a transparent address can expose information. In particular, spending from Orchard to a non-Orchard address reveals the transaction amount. Orchard’s transparent turnstile also means that the shielded pool boundary is not itself a guarantee that the path into or out of the pool is hidden. These mechanics are described in the Orchard specification.

- Choosing a transparent address makes the transaction’s details publicly visible.
- Using Orchard does not combine its anonymity set with Sapling or Sprout.
- Moving value out of Orchard to a non-Orchard address reveals the amount.
Accordingly, “private” should be read as protection for details in shielded transactions, not as a promise that every use of ZEC conceals all activity.
Wallet choice is part of the practical picture
A wallet determines which address types and transaction paths you can use, so wallet support matters when you want to make shielded payments. The Zcash ecosystem directory describes Zashi as a self-custody, Zcash-only shielded wallet: Zcash ecosystem directory. That is an ecosystem description, not an independent assessment of wallet performance. Wallet features and compatibility can change, so check current documentation before relying on a particular capability.

Self-custody is a custody model, not a guarantee of transaction privacy: privacy still depends on the transaction path and address types used. A shielded wallet can support shielded activity, but the wallet label alone does not make every transaction private.

The policy, updated July 1, 2026, says the Foundation does not have access to wallet keys, seed phrases, or shielded transaction contents, and it does not govern third-party wallets and services.
