This Arduino project displays text on a 1.3-inch white, 128×64 I2C OLED and alternates between two screens every 3.5 seconds. The example is written for an SH1106 controller using U8glib, so check the display’s controller, interface and voltage before wiring or choosing a library.

What the project displays

The example defines an SH1106 128×64 display in I2C mode with U8GLIB_SH1106_128X64 u8g(U8G_I2C_OPT_NONE);. Its draw() and draw2() functions set fonts and text positions, then print a short message on each screen. The main loop redraws the two screens in turn, with a 3.5-second delay between them. The project page notes that the display constructor must match the display type: Hackaday.io project instructions.

Wire the I2C OLED to an Arduino Uno

The project’s Uno wiring uses these connections:

OLED pin Arduino Uno connection
VCC 5V, as shown in the project wiring
GND GND
SCL A5
SDA A4

That pinout is for the documented Uno setup, not a universal Arduino pin map. A matching 1.3-inch I2C module manual lists VDD, GND, SCL and SDA pins and specifies a 3.3–5V supply. Check the labels and voltage limits for your exact module and board before connecting power; modules that look similar may have different electrical requirements: 1.3-inch OLED module manual.

Check compatibility before choosing a display or library

Screen size and color do not identify the controller or interface. Confirm the following details in the product listing or datasheet before buying or adapting the example:

Hosyond 5 Pcs 1.3 Inch IIC I2C OLED Display Module 128x64 Pixel SH1106 Screen Module Compatible with Arduino/Raspberry Pi (White)
  • 1.3-inch OLED screen, self-luminous material, no backlight, ultra-low power consumption, normal display is only 0.06W. Blue display.
  • 128x64 resolution, the display effect is clear and the contrast is high. The viewing angle is greater than 160°. Even small fonts are easy to read.
  • Wide voltage power supply (3V~5V), compatible with 3.3V and 5V logic levels, no need for level conversion chips.
  • Embedded driver IC: SH1106. Using the IIC/I2C bus, only 2 IOs are needed to light up the display.
  • Compatible with R3 board and Mega, Raspberry pi, 51 MCU, STIM 32 etc. Provide underlying driver technical support(Contact us for instructions).
  • Interface: This project is wired for I2C. A similarly sized SPI display needs different wiring and is not a direct substitute.
  • Controller: The code selects SH1106. Use a library and driver configuration that explicitly support the controller in your module.
  • Resolution: The example targets 128×64 pixels.
  • Voltage: Check both the supported supply and logic levels for the display and Arduino board.
  • Module type: Verify whether the item is a complete breakout board or a bare display, since connections and electrical requirements may differ.

Controller matching matters because SH1106 has 132 internal columns, of which 128 are visible. An SSD1306-focused library may shift or garble the image when used with an SH1106 display; consult the controller-specific module documentation and choose explicit SH1106 support: SH1106 module manual.

For example, Orient Display’s white 1.3-inch 128×64 product is specified as SPI with 3.3V logic, unlike the I2C-wired module in this project. Its matching size and color are not enough to make it interchangeable: Orient Display product specifications.

Use the I2C address specified for your module

The cited SH1106 module manual gives 0x3C as its default I2C address and notes that some units may use 0x3D. Treat those values as specific to that module, not as a guarantee for every 1.3-inch OLED. If the display does not respond, check the address and the module’s documentation rather than assuming all displays share one setting: module address details.

About the example library

The project uses U8glib and shows the SH1106 constructor used by its example. The available documentation here does not establish U8glib’s present maintenance status or current installation procedure, so check the library’s own project documentation for current setup details before relying on installation instructions found elsewhere.
