Talismans provide passive boosts, and an Xbox Wire hands-on preview reported three talisman slots. Choose effects that complement your weapons, armor, artifacts, and enchantments, then review the combined effects in-game. Official sources establish the system and a few examples, but do not establish exact best talismans for melee, ranged, tank, or support builds.
What talismans do in Minecraft Dungeons II
Talismans add passive bonuses to a build; artifacts, by contrast, provide active abilities. Mojang design director Laura de Llorens described them as “passive boosts” in the Official Xbox Podcast. The Xbox Wire hands-on preview reports that a hero has three talisman slots, alongside equipment choices that include melee and ranged weapons, armor, and artifacts.
The game does not lock a hero into a fixed class in the previewed system. Instead, your role comes from the gear and effects you select. That makes talismans one layer of a flexible setup, not a standalone class choice. The official Minecraft gameplay article describes combat loadouts expanding from six to twelve combat slots; that figure covers combat slots overall, not twelve talisman slots.
Start with your build’s job, then fill its gaps
Before choosing a talisman, decide what you want the complete loadout to accomplish: deal damage up close, attack at range, stay alive under pressure, or gain help from a companion. Then inspect what your weapons, four armor pieces, artifacts, and enchantments already contribute. A passive bonus is most useful when it complements that combination rather than duplicating an effect you already have.

- Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
Use these playstyle prompts as a way to assess effects in your current game, not as fixed item recipes. Official sources do not provide a complete talisman list or enough comparative performance data to name a best choice for each role.
Companion-focused play
The clearest official example is a bone talisman observed in Xbox Wire’s hands-on preview. It summoned a dog that attacked enemies, drew their attention, took damage, and returned after a short respawn timer. The preview author paired it with a weapon enchantment that could create regeneration spots on kills. Together, those observations suggest a companion-and-sustain direction: the dog can draw aggro while the weapon effect offers a possible recovery opportunity.

- Fight against a new, challenging threat that puts your combat skills to the test like never before.
- Craft the perfect hero with legendary gear, including a wide range of weapons, armor, and artifacts.
This is an example of how effects might work together, not proof of a strongest setup. The preview does not state the regeneration effect’s proc chance, a cooldown, or how this combination compares with other options.
Melee or aggressive play
Check your weapon, armor, and artifacts first. If they already support your preferred close-range attacks, look for a talisman whose in-game description addresses a different need in that build. For example, assess whether the passive effect helps with a gap you actually notice during combat rather than assuming an aggression-themed talisman exists or is best.

An Xbox Wire gamescom preview described combat as rewarding aggressive engagement, but it did not identify a talisman as the top choice for melee. Treat that observation as context for the combat style, not as an item recommendation.
Ranged play
For a ranged setup, look at how the talisman’s passive effect fits with your weapon and other gear. The gamescom preview demonstrated a ranged-focused character and enchantment combinations involving dodge-triggered arrows and fire arrows. Those are enchantment examples—not talisman recommendations. Check the effects listed for the items you actually have before deciding whether a passive bonus supports your ranged approach.

Survivability and support
If staying alive or helping create openings is your priority, consider the whole interaction between defensive gear, artifacts, weapon effects, and any companion. The bone-talisman preview’s aggro diversion and the author’s kill-triggered regeneration interaction are relevant examples, but they do not establish that the bone talisman makes a hero tanky or that it is the right support choice in every build.
How to review and refine a loadout
- Choose a role. Decide what the build should do and identify a specific weakness or requirement you want to address.
- Read the effects across your equipment. Compare weapons, armor, artifacts, talismans, and enchantments as one setup. Use the Effects and Enchantments menu described in Xbox Wire’s preview to review effects across weapons, armor, and talismans.
- Select talismans by their descriptions. Use the effects visible in your current game version and inventory; do not rely on an unverified tier list or assume that an example is universally optimal.
- Refine gear and enchantments where needed. The official Minecraft gameplay article describes collecting enchantment books into a library and applying effects to a gear slot through the Enchantsmith. Xbox Wire’s hands-on describes the Blacksmith as a way to upgrade equipment or reroll a buff.
- Review again when your loot changes. New equipment can alter how the passive bonuses, active abilities, and enchantments work together. Recheck the effects summary after changing pieces rather than judging a talisman in isolation.
What the official examples do—and do not—establish
The official material supports the idea of mixing equipment to shape a role, and it gives a concrete bone-talisman companion example. It does not publish a complete item catalog, exact talisman stat values, or tested recipes for melee, ranged, tank, or support play. De Llorens described the design aim as keeping the system approachable while retaining depth: “The fact that we have that yin and yang has helped us a lot in making it as clean, simple, and approachable, but also with all this depth and all the stat screens.”
