Reduce heat entering your home first: shade sun-facing windows, keep windows shut while outdoor air is hotter than indoors, and save ventilation for cooler, safe periods. When you use air conditioning, close off the cooled space and focus on the rooms people occupy. Fans can help people feel cooler, but they do not cool room air—and they are not safe in every level of heat.

Keep heat out during the hottest, sunniest hours

Close blinds, curtains, or shades on windows receiving direct sun, especially during the morning or afternoon when sunlight strikes them. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says exterior awnings and louvers block more incoming heat than interior shades; for an immediate heat wave, use the shading you already have, and consider exterior shading as a longer-term improvement. See the EPA guidance on shading.

  • Keep windows closed when the outdoor air is hotter than the air inside.
  • Turn off lights and electrical equipment you do not need; they add heat indoors.
  • When practical, avoid using ovens and other heat-producing cooking appliances during the hottest part of the day.

These steps reduce heat entering or being generated in the home, so the AC has less heat to remove. Guidance from the World Health Organization, England’s heat guidance, and the U.S. Department of Energy supports this approach.

Ventilate only when outdoor air can help

When it is cooler outside than inside, open windows if it is safe and outdoor air quality permits. If the layout allows, open windows on opposite sides of the home to create cross-ventilation. Close them again as outdoor temperatures rise, so hot air does not replace cooler indoor air.

Ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates, according to the DOE. Do not open windows just because the clock says it is night: compare indoor and outdoor conditions, and account for air quality and safety. The DOE home-cooling guidance and England’s heat guidance describe using cooler outdoor air when conditions allow.

Use the AC to cool occupied space, not the whole home unnecessarily

When air conditioning is running, close windows and doors in the area being cooled. Concentrate cooling where people are instead of trying to keep every room equally cool. Choose the highest thermostat setting that remains comfortable; lowering the setting far beyond what is needed does not make the unit a better heat-safety plan.

WHO’s heatwave advice dated October 11, 2024, says to set air conditioning to 27°C and use an electric fan, which it says can make the room feel 4°C cooler. Treat that as WHO guidance, not a universal prescription for every climate, AC, or person. Follow local public-health advice, your equipment manual, and the needs of anyone in the home who may be especially vulnerable. Read the WHO heatwave Q&A.

Use fans for personal comfort, with heat-safety limits

A fan moves air; it does not lower the room’s air temperature. Moving air can help an occupant feel cooler, including alongside AC. Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water says fans may make people feel about 3°C cooler, but the page does not state a publication year. That is a perceived-comfort estimate, not a drop in room temperature. See its fan guidance.

Fan advice changes at high temperatures, and agencies set different limits. WHO says to use electric fans only below 40°C and warns that they may not prevent heat illness above 35°C. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises indoor fan use only below 90°F. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises against fan cooling in a closed room and in rooms in the mid-90s°F or hotter; it also notes that portable electric fans do not cool air. These thresholds are not interchangeable, so follow the guidance from your local health authority. If the room is dangerously hot, do not rely on a fan instead of AC or moving to a cooler location. Consult the EPA guidance on fan safety and Australian government fan guidance.

Keep the AC filter clear and follow the unit’s instructions

Check the filter and clean or replace it according to the air conditioner’s manual and schedule. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance. DOE estimates that routine filter replacement or cleaning can lower AC energy consumption by 5–15%; that is a published estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual home. The same DOE source gives a broad potential 20–50% reduction in AC energy use from higher-efficiency air conditioners and other cost-lowering actions; it is not a forecast for any particular household. See the DOE AC maintenance guidance and DOE cooling-cost information.

Use the correct filter size and type for your unit. If the AC has a problem beyond basic filter maintenance, contact a qualified professional rather than attempting repairs outside your experience.

If your home remains dangerously hot, move to a cooler place

Home-cooling steps are not a substitute for getting out of a dangerous indoor heat situation. Move to the coolest room available; if you cannot keep the home cool, WHO advises spending 2–3 hours in a cool place, such as an air-conditioned public building. Check on older adults and people with chronic conditions, who may be at higher risk. Follow local heat-health guidance and seek medical help if someone shows signs of heat illness. See the WHO heatwave advice.
