Before correcting a viral accusation, verify both what the video shows and whether it supports the accusation. Trace the clip to its earliest available source, check its date, context and identity, then publish a concise, evidence-based correction where the same audience can see it. Report the post separately if it appears to violate the platform’s rules. A report does not guarantee removal; if the accusation creates a serious legal or safety risk, preserve relevant records and seek qualified local advice.
First, separate the video from the accusation
A clip is not self-authenticating evidence. Genuine footage can be old, edited, misattributed or paired with a misleading caption. It may show that an event occurred without establishing who was involved, why it happened or whether the broader accusation is true. YouTube’s misinformation policy, for example, addresses some technically manipulated or misattributed content, while the UK House of Commons Library advises checking a video’s source and context: House of Commons Library guidance on online misinformation and YouTube misinformation policy.
Write down the accusation as a specific, checkable claim. Then classify what the evidence supports: the claim may be false, the video may be misattributed or out of context, the clip may be edited, or the claim may remain unverified. These are different conclusions. If the footage does not prove an accusation, that alone does not prove the accusation false.
Verify the clip’s source and context
Look for the earliest available upload and determine, if possible, who recorded or first published the footage. Search distinctive phrases from the caption and visible details such as signs, landmarks, uniforms and watermarks. Reverse image search services and tools such as TinEye, Bing, Google and InVID can help locate earlier appearances, but a match is an investigative lead, not proof of authenticity.

- Check whether the date and location match the accusation.
- Compare the viral excerpt with longer footage and contemporaneous material.
- Look for cuts, captions, subtitles or overdubs that may change the apparent meaning.
- Confirm whether the person is identified correctly.
- Separate what is directly visible from interpretations about motive, identity or events outside the frame.
Visual oddities alone do not establish that a video is fake or AI-generated. The House of Commons Library cautions that visual inspection cannot always settle authenticity, especially as image and video-generation tools improve. If the source or context cannot be verified, state that uncertainty rather than guessing.
Check the accusation against independent evidence
Ask what evidence would establish or disprove the exact claim. Look for primary records, statements from people directly involved, full-length footage and reliable reporting that explains its sourcing. Compare accounts for independence: several outlets repeating the same unverified social post are not several independent confirmations. A simple private evidence table can keep the correction within the limits of what is known:
- Claim: the precise assertion being checked.
- Supporting evidence: what substantiates it and where that material originated.
- Contrary evidence: reliable information that conflicts with it.
- Unknowns: what the evidence does not establish.
- Sources and dates: enough detail to let readers check the evidence themselves.
Keep a private record before responding
Record the post’s URL, account handle, date and time you observed it, and the exact wording of the accusation. Keep screenshots or a copy only where lawful and appropriate, and leave your evidence copy unedited. This practical recordkeeping step is not a guarantee that a particular method will meet legal requirements. Avoid circulating the records unnecessarily.

Write a correction that does not overstate the evidence
Be direct: identify the claim in neutral terms, say what the evidence supports instead, cite a primary or reliable source with its date, and name any unresolved point. For example:
Correction: The caption says [brief neutral description of the claim]. The available evidence shows [specific, supported correction]. [Source and date.] The clip does not establish [remaining unknown]. We have asked the original account to update its post.
Use that structure only when each statement is supported. If the evidence is incomplete, say “the claim is unverified” or “the clip does not establish the claim,” rather than presenting a counter-accusation as fact. Avoid insults and speculation about the poster’s intentions.
PBS’s Standards on Accuracy describe its own newsroom practice: “In the event of an error on social media, it is PBS practice to promptly put out a new post with the correct information and to clearly explain what was wrong with the prior post, while being vigilant about not spreading the original inaccuracy.” That is PBS guidance, not a universal legal duty. Publish where the correction can reach the audience
If the original publisher is reachable, ask them to correct or contextualize the post and provide the supporting evidence. If you publish a correction yourself, choose a place where people who saw the accusation are likely to encounter it. Make the correction easy to find, but do not unnecessarily embed, quote-post or link to the harmful accusation; doing so can send it to more people. Government of Canada guidance recommends sharing accurate, sourced information without needing to link to the original false post: Government of Canada guidance on debunking misinformation.
Organizations and newsrooms should follow their own correction policies and maintain a transparent record of changes. PBS advises against simply deleting an erroneous social post without preserving a public record in some manner, while recognizing that platform features differ. This is its editorial guidance, not a requirement for every individual user.
Report a post separately if it may break platform rules
Check the platform’s current policy and reporting process, since rules and menus can change. Describe the specific concern accurately and keep any report reference or status information the service provides. Reporting is separate from publishing a correction, and neither TikTok nor YouTube promises that a particular report will lead to removal.
TikTok says users can report misinformation that may violate its rules and provides a way to track report outcomes and appeal moderation decisions: TikTok: Report a video. YouTube’s policy covers certain manipulated or misattributed material and notes that some content may be permitted with additional context: YouTube misinformation policy.

If the post raises a credible safety concern or could have serious legal consequences, avoid escalating the situation through public speculation. Preserve relevant records where appropriate and consult a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction. Whether a statement is legally defamatory depends on the jurisdiction and specific facts; a viral video alone does not settle that question.
