You can buy Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) on Ethereum, and Solana (SOL) through a supported crypto exchange or, in some cases, a wallet with a purchase service built in. The basic flow is to verify the service and asset support for your location, choose an amount and payment method, inspect the live order preview—including fees—and confirm. Before buying, decide whether to leave the assets with a custodian or take responsibility for your own wallet keys.

How to buy BTC, ETH, or SOL

Exact screens, payment methods, identity checks, minimums, fees, and availability vary by provider and location. Coinbase’s help page is one example of the common exchange purchase flow, not a recommendation or a guarantee that the service is available where you live.

  1. Choose a service that supports the asset where you are. Check that BTC, ETH, or SOL is available to buy in your location, and determine whether the service offers exchange custody, a self-custody wallet, or both.
  2. Create and verify an account if required. An exchange may require identity and payment verification before allowing purchases. Requirements vary by provider and jurisdiction.
  3. Select the asset and amount. Confirm the ticker and, where shown, the network. Coinbase notes that its minimum purchase can vary by asset or payment method.
  4. Choose a payment method and inspect the preview. Check the amount of crypto you will receive and all displayed charges, including payment, provider, spread, withdrawal, and network fees where applicable.
  5. Confirm only after reviewing the details. Check the final amount, payment source, and any custody or delivery destination before submitting the order.

Coinbase documents this general exchange flow in its guide to buying cryptocurrency. Treat the live checkout preview as authoritative for that transaction: fees and options can change.

Buying through a wallet

Some wallets let you buy through a linked exchange account or third-party payment provider. In Coinbase Wallet’s documented flow, the user selects the asset and network, enters an amount, chooses a payment option, then reviews and confirms. Available providers and fee estimates vary by region; outgoing blockchain transactions incur network fees, and third-party estimates can change. See Coinbase Wallet’s purchase instructions and rely on the current checkout details rather than any static example.

Check the network before buying or transferring

An asset name alone may not tell you which blockchain network a transaction will use. Confirm that the selected asset and network match what the receiving wallet supports. A Bitcoin address and an Ethereum address are not interchangeable; sending an asset over an unsupported network or to an incompatible address can make it inaccessible.

Wallet features can differ even within one provider’s products. Coinbase’s supported-assets and networks documentation, for example, distinguishes wallet modes: some support Bitcoin, Solana, and EVM-compatible networks, while its smart wallet is EVM-only. Check the current support for the exact wallet mode and network you plan to use, both before purchasing and before sending crypto.

Exchange custody or your own wallet?

A crypto wallet does not hold coins like a physical wallet holds cash. It holds or manages the private keys or passcodes used to access and control crypto assets. The SEC explains this distinction in its overview of crypto assets and its December 12, 2025 Crypto Asset Custody Basics bulletin.

Approach Who controls the keys? Main trade-off
Exchange or other third-party custody The provider manages the private keys. Buying and account access may be simpler, but you depend on the provider’s security, operations, and terms. Provider failure, compromise, or insolvency can put access at risk.
Self-custody You manage the keys and recovery information, such as a seed phrase. You control access, but you are responsible for protecting the keys and preserving a way to recover them. Loss, theft, damage, or exposure can cause permanent loss of access.

Neither approach removes the need to understand recovery and failure risks. For a custodian, the SEC advises investors to investigate its background and regulation, supported assets, storage and security, privacy, what happens if it fails, whether it can use deposited assets, and its account, transaction, and transfer fees. Do not assume customer assets have bank-deposit insurance.

Hot wallets, cold wallets, and hardware devices

A hot wallet connects to the internet through web, desktop, or mobile software. That can make transactions convenient, but it also creates greater exposure to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically kept offline, often using a physical device, and is generally less exposed online; it is less convenient, and the device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Cold storage is not invulnerable. The SEC notes that physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money, while hot wallets may initially be free.

A hardware wallet is an optional physical-product category, not a requirement for every buyer. If you consider one, check the exact device and firmware for BTC, ETH, and SOL support, compatible networks, recovery design, security documentation, usability, and cost. A product name alone does not establish that it supports the network you need.

Compare services by the details that affect your purchase

There is no universally best exchange or wallet for every beginner: support, terms, and costs vary by provider and location. Compare the following before choosing:

  • Whether BTC, ETH, and SOL are available to buy in your location.
  • Payment methods, identity checks, and purchase minimums.
  • The total shown at checkout, including provider charges or spread.
  • Withdrawal charges and any on-chain network fee.
  • Supported networks and compatibility with the destination wallet.
  • Who controls the private keys, and how account or wallet recovery works.
  • Account security, privacy, and what the service says happens if it fails.
  • For a custodian, setup, annual asset-based, transaction, transfer, and closure fees, where applicable.

The SEC’s custody bulletin discusses questions to ask custodians; Coinbase’s help pages show provider-specific purchasing and wallet examples. Neither is a market-wide fee schedule, and current fees and availability must be checked with the service you plan to use.

Protect your account and keys

  • Use a unique, strong password and enable multifactor authentication on online accounts.
  • Keep a self-custody seed phrase offline in a secure place. Never share it or your private keys, including with someone claiming to be customer support.
  • Be alert to phishing messages, fake support, and pressure to buy or transfer immediately.
  • Before sending a test or full transaction, verify the recipient address, asset, and network independently.

The SEC warns that crypto prices can be volatile and that exchanges may shut down or suffer security failures. Crypto held in a wallet or exchange does not receive the same protections as insured bank deposits or brokerage accounts. Its virtual-currency investment alert discusses these risks. Its December 2025 custody bulletin says, “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” The bulletin represents SEC staff views and does not have legal force or effect.

Direct crypto versus Bitcoin or Ether ETPs

A spot Bitcoin or Ether exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide price exposure without some of the direct risks of transacting on a crypto platform or handling wallet keys. It still carries the volatility of the underlying asset and has product-specific structure and risks; owning an ETP is not the same as holding crypto that you can withdraw to a personal wallet. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 ETP bulletin covers Bitcoin and Ether, not Solana.
